Sounds like my family. I drove an Escort, my paren't have owned two Sables in the past four years and they also have a Mercury Lynx wagon that, despite mine and my brother's best efforts, refuses to give up. I'll be ineterested to see what comes from these J-bodies with the SC. Of course what will really be interesting is when the version comes out for the Ecotec engine platform. I think I'd die if I lost a race to a Saturn ION though.
Oooh... You know, I have to give Saturn their due. They build quite a car for the price and the service is wonderful. I bought a used '98 SL2 2 years ago and when they let me drive my shining 4 year old car off the showroom, I was pretty impressed. My car was a clunker. After two months, the fuel pump went out, at 6 the tranny was going (made an AWFUL clunk when you first started out), at 8 months the water pump went and the head gasket immediately followed. Not to forget that it would stall everytime I went around a sharp right corner. This all prior to even hitting 70K Miles. They did everything they could to help though, but it just got to be too much. I'd probably buy another Saturn. I do like the looks of the new L series, and I don't feel that my problems with my past car are indicative of Saturn's quality, I got a problem-child. That can happen with any company. Anywho, back on track. I don't particularly care for the ION. I think it's kind of funky looking and the interior with that senter mounted instrument cluster looks weird. Toyota pulled it off in their cars and it looks fairly good, Saturn missed something. However, if the SC does all they say it will for the Ecotec engine, we'd better watch our backs. There might be a few funky-looking Saturns out there looking for a Pontiac-Snack.
gm is serious about the ecotech...even with a stock block it can produce some major hp, just look at that dragster cavaliar that is being campaigned this year..jeez even their diesels are fast at 0-60mph in 8.0.

He's referring to the FWD cavy that just recently enter the import drag scene. And it is based off the ecotech. go check out j-body.org . There's quite a few guys running 14's in their Z-24 with the 2.4 DOHC. But these motors have been phased out for the Ecotech. The new Ecotech is quite promising and can handle some pretty impressive pressure. There are a couple of guys running Toyota cavys with 2.4 short block and turbo/supercharger's. They got some fun snap behind them. My ol' 2.2 5 speed was fun on the bottom end! You could get some decent launchs!
But it's still a Cavalier I still can't get past the crash test ratings that basically showed that you are screwed if you are hit, plus the interiors are crap. I'm glad that GM is bringing out a new model soon.
