Toyota will always have a higher resale value than Pontiac.but traditionally resale value has always been calculate incorrcectly. they always use residual / MSRP, but this is incorrect, because MSRP is not what people pays. for example, assuming we are all paying invoice price. Matrix buyer would pay invoice - $750 (current rebate), but a Vibe buyer would pay invoice - $3000 ($2000 rebate + $1000 loyalty rebate), Vibe buyer is starting with a $2.250 lower prices.so if invoice is $20,000 for both Matrix and Vibe, after 3 years, Vibe is worth $1000 less, at $9,000. and Matrix is worth $10,000.traditonally:$10,000 / $20,000 = 50% resale value for Matrix$9,000 / $20,000 = 45% resale value for Vibebut with actual price paid$10,000 / $19,250 = 52% resale value for Matrix$9,000 / $17,000 = 53% resale value for VibeI think traditional method of resale calcultion always favored import cars, as they have less rebates, and often sells much closer to MSRP. so reasle value always seemed lower with domestic cars, which almost always sells below invoice price (due to rebates). Thus domstic autos comes out unfavorably in most magazines.

That is a great deal of information and very useful! THANKS! I'm not too worried about it then because in the long run it's really worth it considering the Rebates and the Incentives that Pontiac had to offer versus the Matrix. I saved A LOT of money that I would not have saved if I were to have purchased a Matrix. So I guess I saved the money now instead of later. Thanks!
Bottom line, if you keep your vehicle in the best condition you can, (exterior, interior, mechanical) that will go a long way when the time comes for you to sell it. The Vibe should last longer than alot of vehicles.. reliability is definately something not short changed on this vehicle.
No, bottom line is that regardless what you own....trade-in will never be what we as owners want. Therefore, just keep it well maintained, cross your fingers and hope that nothing major happens to the car. That is my view on cars.

I was referring to private sale, rather than trade-in where they could give a hoot about the vehicle condition. Private buyers take that into consideration when figuring a fair asking price.
you have to take in to consideration millage and maitenace and remaining warenty/extended warenty. my vibe has like 5400.00 in extra options, I hope this adds a lot to resale value. i personaly see the crossover market exploding just like minivans and suv's did in prior years.
I agree and that how I see it also if you properly take care of the vehicle and you are not a mental case with it day in or day out, to pre mature overkill......if it cost you 35,000 in 10 years,.its like 3500 a year.............then do the math on a monthy basis......291.00 a month and its your own vehicle....If you ask me... this is one of the best ways to get back your money from a car! then keep it for a back up when you buy a new one!
Saw your post - I'm thinking "I don''t spend $3,500 a year to trade every 2 to 3 years". Then I realize we are talking Canadian $$$. Still, all things considered, I think I do as well by trading when the factiry warranty is up and before I have t buy tires, replace brakes etc etc etc. By the way, I see the Canadian $$$ is gaining on the US $$$.

(Matrix is made in Canada and the Vibe in California, I can only srumise the Vibe gets the added cost on it's way over the border)I paid $26 500.00 for my Vibe GT no options (this is about $2 500 less than MSRP). The Matrix XRS was about $25000.00 MSRP which you never pay..........
quote:Which Vibe would have the highest retail value? The Base, GT or AWD ?Personaly I think that may depend on the aftermarket parts availability for the different models...... A lot of younger kids will want to pick up these vehicles in a few years at greatly reduced prices and then personalize them...... i would guess the GT may have a leg up on the Base Vibe as it is a little better starting platform.. More HP/6 speed 4 wheel disks......

The Matrix XRS was about $25000.00 MSRP which you never pay.......... I think the starting price is irrelevant with resale value, because my example would also work with any other car, we are talking about percentage, not the absolute value. My point was that Matrix would have higher resale value (afain in percentage, not absolute value) with old way of calculating resale value. My main concern is that with company like GM that has $3000 rebates (more or less) all the time on almost all models, calclulating resale value from MSRP starts at $3000 lower of resale value already. Resale value should calculate with what people pay, not MSRP. No one pays close to MSRP (or invoice) with GM or Ford, because of the rebates.but to answer your question, Matrix here in U.S. is indeed about a couple of thousand dollar cheaper. but Vibe now has a $3000 rebates (at least here in California), Matrix has a $750 rebates, so it kind of even out. also Vibe comes standard with roof rack, floor mats, rear window wiper and 115 volt outlet (both the cheapest model).

i think it depends on what part of the country you live in...awd is going to probably be premium in the snowy states, while the gt/base might be more popular on the coasts...and in the states/provinces that are more fair than bad in climate and more flat land/cities..jmo
Does anyone know how the Geo Prism compares in resale value to the Toyota Corolla? That should give us a pretty good idea of how the market will set the resale value don't you think?
there is currently a $2000 rebate plus a $1000 GM loyalty rebate on all models, see here:http://pontiac.com/currentoffers/index. ... me#homeyou should go to http://www.carsdirect.com, it is number one car selling web site, and the most important, it is the only real time car price quoting available that I know of. you will see the Vibe is selling at $2000 under invoice (a side box talks about additional $1000 loyalty rebate) on AWD also. I tried both Chicago and NY area. also don't forget the additional $450 upromise money till end of the month.

Geo Prism always had a huge discount to start with (with rebates).

GM got rid of the "Geo" part some time ago - called them Chevy Prizms. I believe the Prizm line was discontinued in 2002. Probably to make room for the Vibe line in 2003. There still is a Chevy Tracker, formerly known as the Geo Tracker - think that is made by Suzuki. When I leased a 1997 Corolla it was a better deal than the Prizm because the stupid bank put a really high % residual value on the Corolla. I had a 24 month lease, 15M a year miles, for 1,300 down and $160 a month. When the lease was up I bought the car out for $11,000, about $2,000 under the residual. Some people don't know you can do that. A car's worth what a car's worth and all they were doing was sending it to the auction. Easier for them to sell it to me for what they anticipated getting at auction and I was happy as I was essentially getting a car I knew at just a few hundred over auction price. I also didn't have to argue over "wear and tear" etc. (I don't think they would have got more than 10,700 at auction so they made an extra $300.)

I offered to buy the car on my last 2 leases for less than residual value. both companies (GMAC and Chrysler Finance) said they could only sell at residual value. I thought that was dumb. did you finance it with smaller bank? or was it with Toyota?

I see your point and since mid last year there have been no incentives offered to Canadian Vibe buyers except the Ring in and win....... not sure about Matrix....... You guys are realy lucky in the US..... Here's why.....My Vibe at a steal of a deal $26 500.00 plus 7% GST (gouge and screw tax) = $1855.00 plus 7.5% (provincial tax) = 1987.50 which brings us to a grand total of $30 342.50......... No incentives and on top of it about 60% of the gas prices here is tax........... Just keep getting screwed..... Then if I sell it to a dealer (trade in) they have to take into acount the GST will have to be charged again to the new owner on the new selling price so they lower the value so they do not get screwed. So i get screwed again.......
if you see Darthviber's post, he got even more discounts:$2000 rebate, $2000 GM family rebate and $1000 loyalty rebate.and if you used GM card, max at $3,500 (does Canadian have GM card?), plus $450 upromise money (ends 03/31). wow, that's a total of $8,950.
