CD skips to 2nd track after the last track

Post by Frosty »

We are finding that our base CD player skips to the 2nd track after finishing all the tracks, rather than going to the 1st track. I have never heard of this happening. Anybody else? otherwise the head unit is fine. This may result in my first trip back to a dealer!

Mine has a tendency to skip either to track 2 or 5 on return if I'm playing a recorded CD with more than 15 tracks. Some brands of CD-R are harder to read and can cause this as well. If this is happening with a pressed/store bought disc, I'm at a loss...

If it happens with all CD's, you may have a problem. If it happens with only certain CD's, those CD's may be scratched or damaged in some way. Try giving them a good cleaning. Also, if this happens on a cold morning when the CD's have been left out all night, there may be some condensation on the disc. If a player can't read a track, it will quickly skip it. When looking at a CD for damage, remember they read from the inside out. If it is a Celine Dion song, I believe all CD players are preprogramed to skip all Celine Dion tracks automatically. This may also be true for Cher songs.

I have noticed that the slightest little piece of dust on a CD will cause mine to skip while in the Vibe. Wheras in the home system it will not skip. From all I have read on the Vibe radio's --I think they were made very cheaply and with poor quality.

Our CD player doesn't skip while playing, it just jumps to track two after the CD is over. I will take note of the # of tracks on the CD to see if that is what is happening. Wouldn't suprise me, some of my home CD players have a quirk from time to time.

Mine does this too from time to time . . . Never paid much attention to it until you mentioned it though.

Did we ever discover whether these problem-CD's were home-made (CD-R/RW) or store bought? Members with the problem, speak up. I reread this topic twice so if I somehow missed something, yell at me.

I ran a 20 track burned cd this a.m., after the last track it dutifully returned to the 1st track ok.Then I went to try a few more discs and the CD player quit!It kept rejecting cd's citing "disc error" or some such message What the (*^&%!Could have been humidity on the discs, but this is the first time that happened. The disc that worked was in the player overnight. I will try again at lunch.....

Haven't had your particular problem with my CD player, but I will say this - it sure is flaky sometimes. For instance, I'll pull in the driveway with a CD playing track 15. Shut off the ignition, go in for the evening. In the morning, if I have a freshly-roasted CD I want to play, I'll eject the disc *before* turning on the ignition. Insert the new disc, start the car... CD player doesn't start playing on track 1. Instead, it starts elsewhere - it varies with the disc I attempt to play. I think it is starting off at the same physical location on the new disc that it was on with the previous disc. It doesn't happen if the ignition is on/radio off when changing discs. Has this happened to anyone? It tends to skip quite a bit as well, even on perfect CD's. I kinda miss the Delco unit that was in my Malibu - that thing would play just about anything you threw in it. Only skipped when the disc was in really bad shape and I hit a bump... BTW, I only have CD-R's in the Vibe, and it seems to have issues regardless of the brand of disc and record speed. I keep all of my real CD's at home, so I may bring a couple with me to see how it behaves. Looks like these radios are just wierd in general - a shame since I actually like the sound of it. Not the greatest, but darn good for a factory setup.Sadly, although I know the exact sequence of events that need to take place to make it act up, I am unable to duplicate the issues. So, probably not much of a chance to get the dealership to replace this thing, unless it gets much worse.

I personally find Memorex and Philips to be the most reliable CD-Rs. DO NOT use TDK, Maxell, or Verbatim. The data layer on those actually flakes off after too short a life, rendering the discs worthless. I got them all as freebies, so no financial strain, but I will never buy them. I have not had any problems reading either burned discs or store-bought ones though. Aside from the mysterious white noise that is.Just make sure you DO NOT use a lens cleaning disc to try and resolve the problem. The manual strongly warns against it. It can pick up grease or stuff from another part of the player and deposit it on the lens, making the problem worse. I had a friend who did that once. She had to buy a new radio. cost her $200 out of pocket, since that isn't covered by warranty. DOH!

I have noticed that the CD in my Vibe is very sensitive to even the slightest amount of dust or lint. A little piece of debris will send my Vibe CD player skipping whereas in the house I have no problems. So I just have to make sure my CD's are very clean before playing and then I have no problems. I've had this problem happen quite often and more often than not it is on CD's not CD-R's. Mine has gotten so bad that it will not play nearly any of my cds. It spits them back out with a check disc message on the screen. Last week though, one day it worked like a charm until I started it up that night and the CD it already had in. It spit out and said check CD.There also is no ryhme or reason as to what it likes and what it doesn't. Some are burned, some are CD-R's. Some are clean as a whistle and some are scratched to pieces nearly.

Chargervibe, if you can easily duplicate the problem, I'd say bring it in! If you're frequently getting 'CHECK CD' on the display, my thought is perhaps the laser is on its way out... Sounds like it is really having problems reading the discs...Unfortunately, I'm still unable to duplicate my issues... Thus, I don't see it worth wasting my time trying to get the stereo replaced, since I KNOW I won't be able to get it to act up in front of the service guy...Since I originally posted months ago, I did notice a couple of times it would skip to the second track after playing the last track on a disc... I still have the bizarre "take-out-a-cd and the next one starts playing somewhere in the middle" thing going on... Skipping and such has been helped considerably by using the black Memorex CD-R's. At least with my stereo, it seems to like those a little better than the lighter CD-R's. The dark CD's are considerably more expensive than the regular ol' CD-R's, but I've found they are worth it...

I have a "store bought" CD with 5 tracks, and my stereo consistently skips to track 2 after finishing track 5 on this CD, so the problem is not limited to just home made CDs or CDs with a lot of tracks on them. I have other CDs where it consistently jumps to track 1 after playing the last track, so it's not something that happens with every CD.

I have noticed the EXACT same problem with mine just in the last few months (never thought to post anything about it, till now). It has never skipped while playing a disc (CDR or store bought CD), but on some CDs it will skip to track 2 after it finishes the CD. I will make a note of how many tracks the discs have and if they are CDs or CDRs, if I think of it when it happens again. It is not all the time... but just every now and then.
