RESONATOR help

Post by prtlnd03gt »

Hi everyone i am new to the vibe. I just bought my 2003 frosty white GT with 32,ooo miles and the person before me has put some mods on it. This is my first car so i havent really worked on them much, but the exhaust is making a loud rattle/crackle in between 2-3,000 RPM's. I took it into the dealer because i thought it might be the catalytic converter (8yr warranty) but they told me it was coming from the "resonator" and that is part of the magnaflow exhaust that is an aftermarket thing so they wont touch it. anyone have any advice on where to go next, i dont know if i can just get a resonator to replace the bad one or if i need all the piping etc. any help would be appreciated.thanks

Nice Vibe, welcome to the site, and you could just cut it off, but I wouldn't recommend it. You will get a ricer tin-can sound. maybe you can get a new one from Magnaflow?

this is a known thing to happen to some magnaflow resonators. If you can get if fixed under their warranty, but since your not the person that purchased the exhaust system they might not warranty fix it but its worth trying. Other wise have a shop replace it with something they recommened or someone from the site here.Welcome to genvibe and your new vibe! hows lift treating ya?

get under the car and pound on the pipe in various sections with your fist. It can either be the lateral bolted brace, or the flange could be misaligned causing it to rattle against the heat shield. I've only seen one case where the actual core of the resonator was loose and rattling.I wouldn't trash the exhaust. They're usually $300 new. If the resonator is bad, you can order another Magnaflow resonator part for about $40 and maybe $20 to get it intalled at a exhaust shop.

When I was looking for a resonator for my '04, Magnaflow didn't make one you could buy seperately. I got a beautiful stainless steel one off Ebay. Awesome quality welds and construction and nicely polished. I'll see if I can find the seller. This looks like the one.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem Or Flowmasterhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

I havent been able to find a site where i could just buy the resonator from magnaflow without buying the whole exhaust system....but we'll see. ANother question i have is that my cigarrete adapter is not on the ceter counsel...instead is in the bottome compartment of the armrest??? anyone know why they would have moved it here ????

Magnaflow always sells individual parts. Just look for a 3" round muffler. Get one that's between 18-22 inches long with 2.25" inlet on ebay.
