So yeah, here's my deal. I love working in foodservice.I had to stop at my old store today and pick up a case of chicken to bring in with me. No big. As always, I put my product in garbage bags so that the "chicken juice" doesn't get all over my car. Well, no such luck today. I got to work, took the stuff out, there's a puddle of "chicken juice" all over my mats. No big deal on the mats, they're rubber. Will yank them, wash thoroughly, hit with some lysol, be done iwth it. BUT, I'm concerned about the carpeting. I know that by the time I get home and get this done, the liquid will have been sitting in there for about 10 hours, so it very likely will have sunk down into the undermatting. My question being, lysol is really for surfaces, not carpeting. Any advice as to how I can sanitize my carpeting so that if anyone DOES come in contact with it they don't risk tracking that deadly crap in "chicken juice" into the house, etc. etc.

Yuck. How about cleaning and soaking it with isopropyl alcohol? Test a spot first for colorfastness. It should sanitize it, and will evaporate relatively quickly and completely.

Blah, just spray a can or two of lysol on it, clean the crap up with some carpet shampoo. It would be fun to leave remains of the chicken there for the next owners to choke. Seriously though, I ended up dumping a shload of alcohol on the carpet and it didn't fade it a bit... try that.

Just a thought here, shouldn't the chicken stay below a certain temperature? Or was it not too far of a trip? But if it had enough time to thaw, that isn't good. Seems a little sketchy to me. Just my opinion. Anywho, I would use a ton of lysol, as long as you soak the carpet, you should be OK.

However, the trip was only an hour. Thanks for the tips everyone. Will see what works and what doesn't.

Go to Wal-Mart or Sams Club and get some ODO-BAN. It's an enzymatic cleaner and disinfectant. It will literally eat the bacteria that causes the odor. You can saturate that area, down to the undermatting and it should work nicely. You might want to sit a fan over it over night to help it dry, but it shouldn't be a problem. I'm a professional carpet cleaner, so I have a great deal of experience with products such as this. I hope this helps, let me know.
Well, this post is almost a year old and ragingfish no longer has the Vibe...although now I'm curious as to if he was successful in sanitizing the carpet.

Thanks GBL, even if it is a year later!

Once for the time my wife spilled an entire "Sunshine Smoothie" from Sonic in the back, and also when my daughter got sick and spewed like a fire hydrant in the back seat. Both times ODO-BAN worked great!
