Rear View Mirror

Post by jake75 »

Well this time I was successful in getting a replacment rear view mirror for $22 ($15 + 7 shipping) on eBay without getting sniped. Guess no one here was aware of it . It's probably a $90 GM Part. Problem is the right light switch on my mirror is defective. Have to push it a hundred times or so before it will catch in the off position. Now to figure out how to swap it out with the new used one. Might ask the dealer what they woudl charge.

If it is the same mirror, then replacing it involves removing the connector, loosening the screw, pulling the old one off, putting the new one on, tightening the screw, and reconnecting the connector.Don't rememberr if it's a torx or allen screw. If you don't have the tool, the tool will cost less than the dealer would charge, and then you'd end up owning the tool for future use

You have a switch on your mirror? Wonder if that came on the older models or a specific accessory.

on vibes that do not have the sunroof, there are two map lights built into the rear view mirror. You have the sunroof, so yours didn't come with the map lights in the mirror. The lights in the mirror are a lot better at night, the light in the sunroof controls shines in your eyes more, the mirror ones are shielded and directed better

The switch for the right side light was the problem. It will be clearer to me when the replacement arrives.

It's going to be a Torx screw, more than likely... I noticed I had my original mirror still sitting here from the Vibe from where I replaced it with the auto-dimming mirror. That car had moon & tunes, but I would imagine the screw would be the same. The mirror should be easy enough to replace.

Is that the screw that has a hole that looks like a squeezed box?

I looked "torx screw" up on Google - I see it is a six tipped star opening.

Well, I paid $22 including shipping for this one. How does that auto dimming thing work? A compass would be nice as I get lost easily in unfamiliar places.

I have a t Torx 1.5 and it seems to fit but a little "loosely". Maybe a 2 is what I really need.My wife is not happy - she said calling the plumber so we can have hot water in the 2nd (guest) shower and the roofer to fix a roof leak (a minor leak that is going to be hard to find) were higher on her priority list than a new mirror for the Vibe. Oh well - I do what I can do! Now if the 2nd refrigerator were on the fritz and I had to drink warm beer - that would be a priority.

O.K. Got the new rear view mirror on - not hard wired (a plug in) so that was easy. 3 minute job. Now to find someone with a Vibe still in warranty to put this one with the bad switch on . . . . (it was acting up before my warranty was up but I forgot about it).I tried to research how much I saved ((if anything) by getting this part on eBay for $22 but could not find this GM part on any website.

Was at dealer today for an oil change - checked the price of this part - is $63.55 + tax = 67.68. Saved a little over 2/3rds buying used on e-Bay.

auto dimming mirrors dim automatically when they sense a headlight from behind. you can get one from any other model. mine came out a grand caravan.

No, it is really called Electrochromatic and dims the actual glass. I do not know exactly how, but it tints the mirror electronically. It has a sensor that faces the rear therefore when headlamps hit it due to a vehicle being close to you, it tints. Automatically brightens on its own too.

As Desi would have said,, "that splains it!". The sticker on my 2004 T&C says it has an "Interior Automatic Day/Night Mirror" and I always thought that was a mistake as it looked like anyother mirror.

No - my T&C "auto dimming" (if it is) mirror just looks like a regular rear view mirror.

I picked up an autodimming mirror with compass from the local boneyard. It came out of an "05 Mercury Sable, of all cars. Cost me $30 for two mirrors, so I put the second one on eBay and got $25 for it. It's a two wire connection - power and ground. I never knew how much I'd appreciate the compass until I drive the wife's Accord which is lacking this feature.

Is it the same connection as used on the Vibe?I have a digitial compass in my T&C and for the directionally challenged like me it is very helpful.

Mine doesn't have maplights in the mirror, so I just ran power to the fusebox and used one of those "Add A Circuit" plugs from AutoZone.
