I was looking around at Shopping.com and found this. I am no expert at this stuff so Im curious if you all heard or know anything about this. To me it looks like a shortram intake with a heatshield.http://www.autopartswarehouse....phoonWould you all recommend not getting this or should I give it a try?
I love mine. It definitely increases throttle response and for me, has had no negative effect on gas mileage. Proponents of full CAI over short rams will tell you SRs are not as good because they are sucking 'hot' air from under the hood instead of 'cold' air down by the fender well, thereby producing less HP gains. I'm not convinced of that allegation and since all the air around here is hot I don't think it makes much difference. Also, with the full CAIs you have to cram them down into a tight fit near the fog light -- makes it hard to service the filter. With a SR the filter is easily accessible. Finally, with a SR you need not worry about submerging your air filter in water. I replaced the K&N filter on mine with an AEM Dryflow because of filtration concerns. The AEM filter doesn't flow quite as much air IMO but there are no pinholes either when you hold one up to the light.

I don't know how necessary the heatshield would be because it would not be blocking the filter from much more than the frame of the car which obviously isn't producing heat. However, I'm not 100% sure so maybe ask around a bit more on the heatshield. Otherwise I do suggest a short ram air intake for the same reasons Kcorona explained, and it makes ur car sound awesome. Good luck
for those of you who dont check the link this is not the K&N intake its an AFE. katscan, if ur vibe is not an 03 or 04 this might not work, just so your aware
There is no real diff between 2003-2006 engines as far as the intake goes. I have been told and after some reasearch, any intake made for a 2003+ Vibe will work. Yes they changed the engines a tad but for the most part the engines are the same. Correct me if I am wrong on this as I do not claim to be an expert or someone that is fully knowlegable on this type of stuff.
Before installing the SR on any newer vibe 05-06, just ASk!!! There are a few tricks to doing any intake on the newer ones. The intake is set up VERY different and there are other parts you need to buy. For instance, there is no EVAP connection. And, you also need to purchase a Breath Filter, and put it on the aux intake which comes from the top of the block (match colors of course) and you need to be very careful to not get a CEL. The 05 and 06 intake is vERY Touchey!

The intake in the pic is not a K&N. I have a K&N typhoon short ram intake on my 04 and it made a difference in throttle response and the launch of the vehicle is much better. It also sounds awesome. I live in south Tx and it is hot as hell so I agree with the kcorona about the difference in "cold air" and short ram air temps.

so what are the basic things you have to do to keep from getting a cel??1. putting a breather on the tube coming out of the engine bay2. cap off all the nipples coming off the intake tube (so NO hoses go to the tube)what about the VSV stuff like the 04s, I was reading that if the thing is angled or whatever it might throw a cel too?
The important thing is that little red filter there. And get an EVAP cap from AutoZone... or use the tube that they give you... bend it at 180 so that it doesn’t allow any air to get through... and tie it there. (That’s what I did) the CEL problem occurs when you don’t let that filter sit out long enough. Even though you’re excited about the new intake.... wait about 48 hours before installing it. The cleaning kits only take about 12-24 hours to dry out... but the new from factory ones are around 48... Especially from K&N because they soak theirs in oil. In the event that you do throw a CEL... you can do 2 things... buy MAF cleaner, 2nd resort use brake cleaner, the spray on kind... and last resort... do what I do and run it under warm water, and spray it with the water gun (please only last resort) it worked for me but I put it under fans all night to air it out. Then after that clear the code at AutoZone, or any place with a code reader. If a code reader is not used to clear (and you used the 5 min battery disconnect method,) it will reappear. Make sure after installing the intake that you take it slow for about 500-1000 miles or 5 days. Avoid unnecessary acceleration. The computer/MAF sensor has to get used to the new intake. PHEW!! anything else?

So I found what looks like an extra filter in my filter box of my 05 vibe the other day!Is that the Evap filter you are talking about? and for in the pic is that the little red filter you are refeering too?If it is does it need to be in there? could I get better airflow if I take it out?

as far as taking it out... i wouldnt suggest it... though you see filterless intakes everywhere on the drag strip... this is not suggested because sand/ and any other hard particals can tear up your engine really quick. i would say to not oil the small filter, and just leave it as a partical filter... honestly the improvement in airflow would not be noticed
