Hello again, question for everyone does anyone know about installing amateur radio into a vibe? The radio I have is a dual band yaseu FT-7800R.thanks,Ben Ramler, K0BLRWQCX494
ullberGM is a member on here. he has a few posts about his crazy radio systems he's installed. do a search for his threads he started... there was one (can't remember the title) about short wave or hand radio operators.
Benny, Being a ham myself, my call is N2MSV, had the same questions. There is not a whole lot of space in the front of Vibe to mount ham radios. When I installed my Icon IC-229H in my 2004 Vibe, I ran the power wires direct from the battery to the interior. I passed the wires though the firewall where the main wiring harnesses grommet is. I used a 4 by 4 about 8 inches long and cut a 45 degree angle on the top. I wrapped the bottom of the wood in packing tape. Then I mounted the radio on the wood to give the radio enough angle to access the controls, The 4 by 4 fits well in the square tray in front of my console. And gives some room between the radio and the shift console, the draw back is you can’t get in the tray in front of the shifter. When the radio is in. It works but not a good look. I just ordered a Kenwood TM-D700A which has a removable face to make it easier to mount under the seat in the Vibe and mount the face in the square tray and to hide face of the radio when I park. I don’t like to leave the radio in the open when I am in work, I am afraid it may disappear. I am not sure if the Yaesu FT-7800R you have has a removable face or not. I tried to use a window mounted antenna for 2m and 440 but I could not get a good SWR I think it is the tinted glass. I have a moon roof package so I don’t have any good place to use a though the roof mount. So right now I am using a mag mount. I just started to look into a roof rack mount, but I am not sure if the roof rack would need to be grounded better. That is a project for a long weekend when it is cooler. I also found that ProClip makes a Center Mount No. 853448 which should hold a radio face, at least that is what customer service says. It mounts just left of the flasher button, it is a clip in.I hope this gives you some ideas.

I'm a ham, but I never graduated from an HT so I didn't have to worry about mounting locations. I had a glass-mount 2M/400 which worked good enough to receive, not so good to transmit but I didn't really ever talk to too many anyway. ullbergm's setup was pretty neat, he removed the dash storage compt. left of the wheel and mounted the control face there. There were always too many curves and such to make it easy to mount extra goodies in those Vibes. 73's!

yes the 7800 and the 8900 which I own also both have the seperation for the head. What I was thinking was mounting the body underneath the seat and then How I will mount the head now I do not know.
