Vibegrrrl, one of the admins at MatrixVibe.net is putting together a how-to on the short shifter. I think there's already one on Matrixowners.com. I'll post a link to them once they're completed.

I will be getting mine tomorrow and hope to start on the install soon. Being that the weather is nice, I'll probably work on it tomorrow after work. I would think that 2 hours is a pretty good estimate if you are handy. Basically, you have to drill 2 holes for a new mount and then mod the pocket below the shifter since the throw is a lot longer. Looking at the pieces, the bottom part adds a few inches which will probably interfere with the pocket. I will also try to post some pics so you can see what a normal guy goes through installing the shifter.
It should make the shifts a little easier to hit since you don't have to travel as far.I did get mine installed tonight and it took about 2 hours. It would have went faster, but I took my time and double checked every step. Some steps like removing the quick washers is a pain as well as the cutting. Those two steps took a good 1/2 hour of fumbling around. I hope someone with a little more car knoweldge could explain how to release those quick washer a little better than prying them off like a mad man.I did get a chance to try it out and for me personally, the shifts feel better. I really liked how short the shifts where on the Camero SS and a few other sports cars. It's more of a personal preference, but everyone should try a car with a short throw shifter.
quote:Glad you were able to get it installed. Does it help with the notchiness of the shifting? That's the part that bothers me the most.Honestly, I think the notchiness is a characteristic of the gear box and not of the shifter. The shifts are a lot quicker so the notchiness doesn't last long. Really hard to explain, but it feels a little more accurate since you have less time to make a bad move. I will be able to tell more after a day of work and back home.
I figured it probably didn't have anything to do with the shifter, but I had to hope. I'm actually getting used to it now anyway. I look forward to hearing your opinion once you've driven it more. I just can't decide yet if it's worth cutting my car up for.
Well after a day of commute I got a little more familiar with the shifter. For starters, the effort to switch gears has increased. That was obvious from the fact that the levers have changed length. If you do a lot of city driving it might become a fatigue factor. The notchiness is down a lot since you are not out of gear as long. Moving from 2nd to 3rd is a little more akward since your front and back motion has decreased significantly while the side to side remains the same. You really have to move it over a lot quicker to match the short throw. It's harder to go up into 3rd since it's more of hitting it at an angle. Cutting also isn't that great since you loose the storage pouch. Even cutting to the end where it can barely be hidden only gives you a small amount of room. I'm afraid that rubbing might still occur just from that area not being rigid. My recommendation is that unless you do a lot of racing, stick with what you have. Takes less effort and is more forgiving. Also, ditch the TRD shift knob. The thing is really small and hard to keep in your hand properly.I should also note that the mod can be undone if you buy a new base plate for your shifter. I'm sure after the salvage yard fills up, one can be had for cheap as well as the housing.
I'm ok with it for now. I will just reinstall the original shift knob. There is a good weight difference with the original weighing about 3 times as much. That could make a big difference and I will report back after the commute tomorrow.
I have a B&B Ripper shifter in my C5 and I absolutely love it. I'm monitoring the progress and comments on those who had installed the Quickshifter. Mu_Ohio, I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences thus far!!

Having it for a month now, I can honestly say that I don't regret the cutting and I'm very used to the short throw. If you own the car, then go for it in my opinion. I don't know about everyone else, but that pocket was too far down to be useful. It was actually never opened until I had to install the shifter.

I have one if you would like to come up to Canada and borrow it................
