I found a pic of my 5 speed stock shifter. Does the arrow show where the wires are that you are asking about?I have no idea what they are for, but on the 5 speed there is nothing to measure what gear you are in, and the reverse switch is built into the tranny, not the shifter. I haven't looked at my car to see what those are, or if they are even clipped to the shifter or something else
Joatmon is right. The white plugs that his arrow point to are the ones in question. And I have a 2003 5 speed. Anybody know what they could be used for? On my car, they were not connected to anything. I hoped there was some option that went there.
It could be wired for something it doesn't have to save money. Who knows, that could go to the O/D switch, the shift lock solenoid, or the gear indicator light if it had an automatic but they just left it there for the manual...What about the annoying beeper switch on the 6-speed, is that built into the backup light switch or is that separate? If it is separate, maybe this has something to do with it, once again added to the 5-speed to save money...

Thanks to everyone that replied. I think I am just going to tie wrap them so they don't rattle around. I have driven long enough without the console put together.
