Is Cargo Mat Standard on 2006?

Post by dalemccl »

I am considering buying a 2006 Base Vibe this week. I see discussion on this forum about how to make custom cargo mats so items don't slide around while driving. On the Pontiac web site, they list a "cargo mat" as standard equipment for 2006. Is this standard mat the item that covers the hard surface of the cargo area so items don't slide and shift? Does it have cutouts so it doesn't cover the rail system? They also list a "cargo cover" as standard. What is that?

It is not standard in Canada but may be in the USA. There are no cut-outs for the rail system. It is carpet. The cargo cover is a heavy vinyl cover which clips to the tie-down points to support it at about seat height. I sold both of mine from my '04 and '06 but some people like them. I live in the country so I have no need to hide what is in the back of the car.

I have both. I like the cargo cover because it keeps my sub hidden, but it isn't a good cargo cover, probably one of the cheapest ever made by GM.

The cargo mat did come standard with my 2006 base Vibe. Yeah, it does not have cutouts for the rails. Also, it only covers the "trunk" area behind the back seats, i.e. when you fold the seats flat, there's nothing to cover the front half of the resulting cargo area. That said, the mat is very useful, it really makes things stay put much better. And when you don't want to use it (loading is really easy without it, and things don't slide around if you're using the tiedowns), you can just roll it up and stuff it behind the front seats. The cargo cover on the other hand, I find totally useless (not that there isn't a need, this just doesn't fill it). Its purpose is that when the back seats are up, you can put this in place and people can't see what, if anything, is in the "trunk". I think mine might actually be wrongly manufactured, I can't even get it to work.
