Like the topic states...has anyone bitten the bullet and had this done? I'm dreading it myself, as I refuse to take it to the incompetent idiots at the $tealer who will invariably mess something up AND overcharge me for both labor and parts. My dilemma is finding parts outside of buying them myself from the $tealership's parts department. We're near 70k..at the very least I need to get in there and check the clearances. With a little luck they are within spec, but I have a feeling they might be a little bit out. The lifters are a lot noisier now than when the car was new, and it's not even that old, in terms of "toyota longevity." If you've had it done, who did it and how much did it cost? Same thing if you did it yourself. The job doesn't look difficult, just time consuming.
wyldejackyl,Sorry, I haven't had mine done but I did take mine into the Toyota service center last Fall and had em checked. All they really did was listen to them with a scope of some kind, to see if there was any abnormal noise. They couldn't quote me a price on the actual service because they had never actually had to do that service on this engine type yet. Apparently they had only done it once on a Camry. After checking mine, they said it sounded normal and that they don't like to take apart any part of the engine unless it's truly necessary. My inspection was free.Dave
One Toyota dealer refused to admit they even do valve lashing on these engines. Another wanted $400 to do the job but I was the first person they've ever ran across that asked about it and they've never done one. They were more or less told "if it is making noise" it needed to be done, which it was since it had been sounding like a diesel since 30,xxx miles. But I never bothered to spend the money to get it done, I just dumped the car instead, that was a better solution for me.

Yeah I read your posts..and sorry to say - they are hilarious! And I thought we had a lemon! All we have so far is problems with the stock stereo which we've had fixed a few times. Ours doesn't sound quite like a diesel yet, but it's noisy compared even to my dad's 4runner, and that's a 6 cylinder. Plus I think it's got less pickup than it should have (for a vibe anyway). I can't believe no one's had this done yet..even on a corolla! Who are those people that buy a car to put miles on it?!
Hydraulics like on our cars (and nearly every other car made today) rarely if ever need to have the valves lashed. If you have to suffer a valvetrain or head gasket failure, the valves will need to have the lash checked, but they shouldn't need adjustment. More often then not if you have noise its either really bad, or it can be resolved by adding oil. However, if it is as easy as adding oil, you've already done more damage to the engine ...

Apparently checking the valve clearances is relatively easy. The procedure is described at http://www.corolland.com/forum...17102 .If the valves do require adjusting, it needs new valve lifters and removal of the camshaft ... very involved. The procedure is in the attachment.

If you know the GM part #, you might try http://gmpartsdirect.com and/or the Toyota # for http://toyotaparts4u.com/.The latter you'll probably have to call them, they generally don't have stuff like that online.
