I've got some Boston Acooustic, S-65. They're pretty descent for the price, you can probably find them at 60U$ on ebay.Mike

I believe the front and the rear are both 6.5s. The fronts will also need a 1" spacer to clear the window.

You are right. 6.5" speakers in both front and rear doors. Source: Crutchfield.com Crutchfield advised that speaker brackets are necessary for proper installation.

i put 6.5 inch in the front and back.. in the back door I used the speaker bracket that came from Crutchfield but in the front I used a post from the site and cut out the speaker cone from the stock front speakers and used a dremel tool to cut the plastic ribs holding the magnet in with some other minor modifications mounted the aftermarket speaker in the remaining stock speaker frame ..worked great

I checked Crutchfield for you and a 6 3/4" speaker will fit. I copied the following from the website: Installation Details for your 2005 Vibe » Use the factory speaker grilles. » A speaker adapter bracket is required. It is included free with your speaker purchase. » Re-drill the mounting screw holes. » Drill out rivets to remove the factory speakers. Most of the speakers listed were 6 3/4" but will fit the 6 1/2" opening. Maybe your buddy can help you with the brackets needed or you might be able to modify the factory bracket like meistees did.
