Do you have a plug here?

Post by Atomb »

I was looking at my engine over the weekend and saw this:It's the rubber boot that is on that part that deals with the manual shifter (??)Anyways, see that rectangular hole to the right...part of the rubber boot? When i put my finger in there, it's open...stuff can get right into what i'm assuming the rubber boot is trying to protect! I don't remember if there was ever a plug on that rectangular hole...can anybody check their Vibe and let me know if i need to plug that hole? Thanks in advance!

hiya AtombI just used it to pull the boot off once or twice to lube inside of there. Didn't realize it was a hole all the way through the piece. Wast a plug or anything... Just what you see in that pic as well. Since the boot can't easily be removed, I never looked behind it. I just used it for grip to pull it off. I guess if it's open now I won't have to take it off.Dave

Here is where it is located on a marked up version of one of your cardomain photos.

that's it, joat. thanks for the clarificationDavidPIL...does that mean there's no need for me to plug it up?What do you lube behind there with? Is it required? Thanks for the help...Mrizzle, take a look anyways and see if you have a plug there?joat: can dust getting into there affect anything? You mentioned that it has something to do with the clutch fork...(clutch slave cylinder being to the left). Will a hole in that boot affect anything as far as clutch performance is concerned?thanks.

Atomb,I never had a plug there. Just the boot. I can't imagine much being able to get in there anyway.I sprayed some Lithium Grease in there. Someone a year or 2 ago mentioned lubing that area if you heard the clutch pedal squeak. Not sure if it helped but I did it anyway. Are you sure the opening goes all the way through? I think it was just part of the rubber to allow you to pull it off. I see the hole but I'm guessing it has a bottom to it. Your finger wouldn't have gone deep enough to feel. I really think it's just a molded handle type thing to pull it off. Dave

thanks for the info, Dave.Interestingly, my clutch pedal does squeak, but i'm pretty sure (through some contortion) that the squeak is occuring under my dash and not in the engine bay...I'll check out the hole in more detail tomorrow after work (stanley cup game 7 about to start in a half hour and i've still got to barbecue my good luck steak!)I'll have to think about the lithium grease option...who knows it might be good!Tom

Mine does have a hole and it does go straight through, but I wouldn't worry about it. THe ridges in the boot look like they keep the thing mostly closed off anyway.here is a pic of the rest of the clutch fork. I had a clutch pedal squeak early on, but some grease on the cable on the clutch pedal side fixed that, some 80K miles or so ago

Yeah... Just rechecked mine. The hole is small. I gave it another long shot of Lithium grease. The pedal seemed much smoother, easier to push after. Dave

hmmm... I have nearly 70,000 and though I want to change my clutch, it's not much worse than it was from the beginning. Maybe it's what it needed! heheDave
