Well I changed over this weekend to Quakerstate full synthetic and went with the fram full synthetic oil filter. From what I have been reading the fram filter is garbage (found out after the fact) does this include the synthetic type filter as well? The recomended oil changes are at 11,000 km I phoned the dealer here, they recomended 8,000 km. I am not wanting to change out my filter and oil right now. I just spent $50.00 cdn on the filter and oil, the freaking filter was $13.00. If the filters are garbage what would i get away with before having to change it out? any ideas or recomondations. I have noticed the motor does idel alot smoother and lower rpm's. also wondering if you get more pony's as a result of going over to a synthetic oil. I spoke with a few people and they asked if i noticed the performance increase and I thought it was in my head. Also is it a myth about the milage on a motor as to swap oils or not? I have 49,000 km on my 05 Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Which exact Fram filter did you buy? Some of the higher end Fram's...the one's without cardboard endcaps, etc....are really okay filters. The problem with them is that they are way overpriced for comparable filters from Purolator (Pure One), Bosch/Mann, even Denso (Japan, not Thailand). That said, if you bought the Extended Guard Fram filter, you should be fine up to an 11k (Km) OCI. But in the future, save yourself some money and get a Pure One for ~$6 (US) or spend more for an Amsoil or Mobil 1 extended life filter and go 24k (Km).As for performance gains, engine idle may seem smoother as well as a slight lowering of RPM's, but anytime you see an advertisement about increased HP, it's probably BS. I've been using M1 w/Toyota OEM filter for 10k (miles) and the only thing I've noticed is a little more chatter in the engine, something Mobil is getting a reputation for. I'm trying a few runs of Pennzoil Platinum next, followed with (gulp) a few with Walmart ST Synthetic and a 4oz shot of VSOT for extra moly. Also, the thing about "when to change from dino to synth" is an old myth. You can change anytime on any modern engine without fear of seal leaks and compression issues. This is one of those dumb myths that just won't go away for some reason; whenever you get a "don't do it" response, it's always a "friend of a friend whose '78 El Camino started leaking like a sieve and when he checked the seals, his mullet got covered in oil" story. Don't worry...

The most recent 4000 miles run of M1 showed some consumption (maybe half a quart). I am currently using Pen Plat. and a Napa Gold filter. After 700 miles, (I agree not a ton of mileage), but there has been *no* consumption.
I've read a lot of guys are running PP lately, maybe because it's ~$5 cheaper than a jug of M1, maybe because of all the $15 rebate deals a few months ago. I hope it turns out to be as good as people are claiming, since I've got two cases of it.BTW: In case anyone is interested, Valvoline has extended the Free Maxlife and Maxlife Synthetic offer. It's five quarts free, via rebate, up to $17.50 for regular and $29.00 for synthetic. Here's the link:http://www.valvoline.com/qrz59...4EE68PS: I stole this from BITOG.

The fram will be fine in the summer anyway. the oil will never be thick enough at start up to rupture the media in these temps.
Vibe GT, TRD springs, Progress bar, STB, Unichip, Borbet E 16x7.5, 225/50 Bridgestone RE750, beefed up grounds and battery bypass capacitors(had em laying around)
I just changed my 06 base 5spd over to M1 with a standard purolator filter. 4049miles on the odometer right now. My first impression after driving for 60 miles stop and go after the change is the engine seems to spin up the rpm band with greater ease. Also when running a gear in the lower end of its rpm band the engine doesnt bog. Lastly I feel better pedal response(not alot but some). I will monitor for consumption and mpg results. Currently getting 34 city 37.5 hwy running 75 mph ave .
