Has anyone installed a Neo iOn into their 2006 Vibe?

Post by Nomad »

I'm a very new 2006 Vibe owner (drove it off the lot on Monday, May 8) but a long-time iPod fanatic. The best option to get the audio through the 6 CD-player that came with my Vibe is via the Neo iOn advertised at http://ww.mp3yourcar.com.http://www.mp3 ... ..=2005The page indicates that it works fine with the 2003-2005 Vibes, but makes no mention of the 2006. It sounds pretty easy to install, but I want to make sure it is doable before I invest $200 in a cable and adapter.Has anyone had experience with these things in Vibes in general, and the 2006 Vibe specifically?

It looks like on the 2006 you can get the in-dash 6 changer with XM radio. According to the Neo iOn site, it will work with the changer as long as you're willing to give up (or don't have) XM.Either a CD Changer *OR* an XM Radio can be used in combination with the Neo iOn.Plugs in behind car stereo using included GM-C adapter cable.Neo iOn switches 2, 3, and 8 ON (Down) for XM mode. Switches 1, 3, and 8 ON (Down) for CD Changer mode. Can't guarantee it'll work though.. I'd check on their return policy, but otherwise, you'll probably have to just give it a shot to know!

Thanks, JT! I am trying to hold off a bit until I have driven the car enough to be sure it is not a lemon. Don't want to have just opened her up, only to find an electrical problem that the dealer can blame on me.But chances are within 6 months I will purchase and have one installed. I don't use XM-Radio right now, and the unit I used when I did had a built-in RF adapter that worked reasonably well.

Well, in the context of the conversation, XM in this case is referring to factory installed XM, which i'm guessing you don't have!

I was fairly sure that XM still wasn't available on the 2006 and that the 6CD wasn't changed for 06, which means it won't work.HOW TO TELL: If your 6CD unit has an AM/FM button, the iOn will NOT work.If it has a "Band" button, you may be in luck.

According to the 'Build your Pontiac' page, it is available, even on the 6disc.

Sorry, I got a bit lost by the cross-talk. Let me clarify my position.I have the 6-CD changer - NO XM - on the current model. The band button is marked "AM/FM". The CD button has both a CD and AUX section on it.So... Am I stuck without being able to install the Neo iOn? Or should I be okay?

Ah..in that case you may be stuck. I think the only 6CDs that will work with it have to have the 'Band' button.

The radio has to have "Band", NOT "AM/FM" to work with any external input. So far, no model year Vibe 6CD has a Band button. If you really want to hook up the ipod, you might consider giving up the 6CD for a 1CD from Ebay. (You can usually get them for about $40). Make sure the 1CD is from a 2004+ Vibe. A 2003 Vibe or any Matrix 1CD unit won't work (it has "AM/FM").

Sigh. Oh, well. A man lives in hope. I'll have to make due with my RF Adapter. If there is no way to hook an Auxilliary output, however, why does the radio have an AUX button on it?

You can get an FM modulator, which will sound much better than an FM transmitter. You can IM Kari- she's had one for a couple years for her ipod and has been very happy with the sound quality.I have no idea why the button still says "AUX". I suspect that it's because some units in other vehicles have firmware that allows external input, and Delphi just makes the one button for cost reasons.

Thanks, GMJAP. It is not encouraging news, but better to know the patient is terminal and be able to prepare for it, than to stand around wondering if you should call the doctor for that nasty cough.OK, that is WAY overstating it. I still LOVE this car. And am REALLY enjoying the 6 CD changer.

Thanks again for the good advice folks. Some other "friends" online had tried to claim that the Neo iOn would work with "any car on the market". I find it amusing that today if you go to the MP3Yourcar.Com website and select a 2006 Pontiac Vibe, they actually suggest a set of portable speakers for the iPod instead!http://www.mp3yourcar.com/sear...=2006Too funny.

Nomad- Just in case you haven't seen this thread - if you are reasonably comfortable with a soldering iron (or even just rather adventurous ) the following thread has detailed info on how to wire in an external sound source to the 6CD with a switch so you can switch between the audio coming from the internal 6CD player or the external audio source:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=11735

I need a clarification please. I have a 2003 Vibe with single CD and an FM/AM button and a CD/Aux button. Will Neo Ion work? or do I need to get a single CD radio with a Band button? I watched the video on the Neo site about easy installation and it looked like a straight plug in, so I pulled my radio out and there is no empty plug-in slot, both (2) have wires plugged in them.I am not good/comfortable with electronics so the soldering thing is out of the question for me.

It looks like it's just a repacking of the Peripheral IPOD2CAR / PAC IPAC-OEM.There is a 12-pin connector (smaller one) that is also plugged into the head unit on cars with Moon & Tunes. This has a single wire, labeled "mute control". Not sure what it does. In any case, both of the Peripheral products I've used (AUX2CAR & CD2CAR) has a pass-through on the connecting cable. In other words, the cable coming from the product had 2 connectors - one plugged into the 12-pin, the other was to plug in the original car-connector, and it just passes in the signals that the aux/ipod product doesn't use. So just check to make sure the Neo Ion has a pass-through connection cable for the current connector plugged into your radio's 12-pinHTH
