I just purchased a Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector. I purchased this because I'm on the road so much. After doing some research and looking at several field tests done on radar detectors I feel I have bought the best of the best when it comes to radar and laser detectors.I found a bran new Escort Passport 8500 for $249.00 on ebay. They normally run $300 to $400.After a few weeks I'll report back to let you know how it's working. Early next month I'll be on the road visiting different units for the Coast Guard and I can let you all know how it works on the Interstate as well.
Thanks - that is one thing I have been looking to buy. If I get anymore speeding tickets my wife is going to chop my head off.

Cobras are ok but all the field;d tests I found on-line none of the cobras did well. I'm not trying at all to bask your radar detector just stating what I read in different tests. The cobras seemed to pick up police radar around 3/4 mile from the cop. The Escort was picking up the same officer at over 3 miles. The same out come happened in several different tests done by different people.I did learn something about the hyped up Phantom radar jammers/detectors. They don't work. Every test done on these passive radar jammers didn't do anything to the radar gun. What a waste of money.Active radar jammer works but are illegal in ever state. Passive radar jammers are legal but there is a reason. THEY DON"T WORK. Glad I didn't waste my money on one. As long as I'm given enough time to adjust my speed I'll be ok. I think the 8500 once I get it in the mail next week will work out great if it does what these field tests say it can do.

Its quite a bit more expensive for a new one though. It was designed by one of Passport's inventors actually, and the old one handed down to me still works great. Better at least, than my newer Cobra, or Escort which were at least 4 years younger than my Valentine.

No cord? Wow, that is pretty neat. Shows you how little I know about radar detectors

I got one of those for my BDAY last month....my boyfriend bought it for me. It works good, but then I don't knwow too much about radar detectors....I personally don't like the looks of it all all though. Too big and bulky. He bought mine on EBay as well...gotta love it!!

Now that I have been thinking about, I believe a radar detector will be my next toy...errr...I mean useful device. I can't wait to hear about the Escort Passport 8500 and I am going to start doing some research on this subject. 65 sure is slow when you are on a long trip.

well...somebody posted a bunch of links to a radar detector testing thing a while back...really informative and i think the 8500 came out on top of in all those tests too...even over the valentine one. as for drb22's quote about slow speeds on road trips...i think i have the answer for him and everybody. I frequently make a 3hr drive either to or from my school in Kansas City....I live in St. Louis...now i scoot pretty much the whole way above 90mph...never below 80mph and as you may have read in my post a while back in "Racing" i was even with a WRX for about 50miles at 115mph . the secret??...here it is: a good radar detector (i have a BEL870 $135 ..i do want an even better one!!) and a CB radio. the CB is indispensible...you have to listen in on channel 19 where all the highway chatter between truckers is but they will tell you where cops are..they always say the exact milemarker and where abouts he is. FOR EXAMPLE: "Eastbound!!, HAMMERDOWN, smokey bear at the 182 on the right shoulder!" BINGO...as you get closer to the 182 milemarker...you just slow down and smile as you pass that cop.....I IT!!! do make sure you get a really good (and big) antenna...otherwise you'll hear about the cop while hes already chasing you!! my antenna is about 4.5ft high...i take it off when im not making a road trip.still never had a speeding ticket....
