Yes, I hear it every day because I always drive with my lights on and don't bother turning them off for the 3 minutes I go in the gas station and grab a cup of coffee. If the switch is in parking lights or headlights position, there will be a constant BEEEEEEP coming from that god awful cheap Radio Shack piezo buzzer we have as soon as you open the driver's door and will stay on until you close the door or turn the lights off. (couldn't Toyota spend the extra $2 and give us a proper chime? (removed)!) If you have the keys in the ignition, the headlight warning still overrides the key warning. EDIT I think that's the other way around, you get the pulsing beep until the keys are removed THEN the steady beep. I always get crap backwards.

That sucks man! See my above edit just in case that makes any difference, I told ya wrong earlier. If you want to check the fuses, the ones associated with this circuit are GAUGE and TAIL which can be found in the instrument panel fuse block; DOME in the engine compartment fuse block is the third one to check. It may not be a fuse though, seeing how much crap is tied into the circuits protected by these three fuses. You'd probably notice that you had a ton of electrical things that were completely dead to the world. As far as the location of the various components: The buzzer itself is integrated into the cluster, soldered on - no chance of that rascal getting unplugged. The DRL relay is involved as well, which can be found by sticking your head up under the dash on the driver's side and looking above the accelerator. It is probably labeled "Toyota DRL relay" or something similar. The other stuff, I dunno.I would check the wiring that plugs into the cluster... It could have worked its way loose, not receiving the signal for when the lights are on. Could be something as simple as that.Good luck! I've attached the wiring diagram and also quoted a bit from there for how it works...Quote »The current is applied at all times to TERMINAL 1 of the combination meter through the DOME fuse. When the ignition SW is turned to ON position, the current flows to TERMINAL 21 of the combination meter through the GAUGE fuse. When the light control SW is turned to Tail or Head position, current is applied to TERMINAL 4 of the combination meter through the TAIL fuse via the TAIL relay (USA) or the light control SW (Canada).1. Light Reminder SystemWhen the light control SW is in Tail or Head position, the ignition SW turned to OFF from ON position, and the driver’s door opened (Door courtesy SW on), the current flows to TERMINAL 21 of the combination meter stops. As a result, the combination meter is activated and current flows from TERMINAL 1 of the combination meter to TERMINAL 40 to GROUND, the buzzer in the combination meter goes on to remind the light is lighting up. 2. Key Reminder SystemWhen the driver door is opened with the ignition SW off and ignition key remaining in the key cylinder (Unlock warning SW on), a signal is input from the unlock warning SW to TERMINAL 15 of the combination meter, and from the door courtesy SW front LH to TERMINAL 26 of the combination meter. As a result, the buzzer in the combination meter goes on and warns the driver that the key is remaining in the key cylinder.

This is a weird one, man! So, with the lights on, key off and out of the ignition, you can hear the buzzer going off but it is very faint? How about the other two reminders? Do the key and seat belt reminders also have a faint sound? If so, the buzzer could be shot which probably means time for a new cluster. But, if it just the lights on reminder, I don't know what to think! It doesn't make sense to me to have two working and one barely, all of the reminders should either be functional or dysfunctional at the same level seeing how they go through the same buzzer!

the faint beep happens when the key is in the igintion.....its so faint...cant hear it with the lights on.....what ever device makes the beeping sound must be shot......i dont know where it is, but it sounds like it comes from behind the tach dial.i wonder if i could find it and replace it??

Ok, that makes more sense. Are you any good at soldering? There's a howto somewhere around matrix owners about removing the buzzer, but I don't recall what process they've used to remove it - whether it was just ripping it out or whether it was removing it properly so that a new one could be installed. Can't tell ya, I don't hang out there. It should be a simple desolder/solder job if you're up to the task. I don't know if I could do that without wrecking something in the cluster. I would probably make a cluster out of the cluster. (removed)! If you can figure out how it works, maybe you can use it as an opportunity to experiment with other chime module from another car and install it.

No, this isn't a GM product. Nothing is integrated into the radio like it is with GM cars, so the chimes don't go through the radio...The warning buzzer is part of the gauge cluster itself.

You have no idea how happy that makes me. If there was something on, after the car is shut off, i hate to say it but i need the warning to remind me that the lights are on! Lol

Yep, you're safe. I've got an aftermarket in mine and that grating beep beep beep is just as present now as it was with the stock radio. So no worries.

If you are still under warranty then you can probably get it fixed. However, the dealer would probably just replace the instrument cluster, which is not a cheap part, and they'll have to get the new one programmed with your odometer reading. if you're not under warranty, there may be a cheaper way to replace or augment the existing beeper. However, I just looked up your first post, and in it you said you got your car used. If it beeps but is faint, maybe the previous owner put something over the beeper to get it to be quieter. Some people here have taked about doing that. Might be worth a look to see before you take it in to the dealer.

I never thought about that, which is odd because I had kicked around the idea of putting something over the buzzer to shut it up a bit. That's a good thing to look into! Also, think there is any way to interface with the stock radio and the chime functionality that's already there? i.e. hold down 6 when the ignition is on and the radio is off, it lets you select the chime volumes. Probably won't be easy or even possible but something to consider I suppose...

Acknowledged. But if one could run the wiring/etc. that would give the radio the signal to chime...

True, if you also modify the radio to generate a chime based on those added wires
