Short Shift Install Question

A friend of mine is telling me that installing a short throw shifter can **** up the transmission. I want to purchase and install a TWM short shift, but I also don't need my transmission to blow. Any advice?

A short throw shifter only shortens the length of the rod that the actual 'shifter' is connected to. As far as I know it doesn't alter anything in the actual shifting.Sounds like that friend of yours is an idiot.

The short shifter doesn't mess up the transmission. A driver who thinks the newly found short throw means the transmission can be slammed into gears causes problems.

Mario, careful there...Jahntassa wasn't trying to be mean. At least I've never known him to show callous towards anyone on here...The short-throw shift changes the length of the shift lever, but doesn't not effect the transmission directly. The transmission connection and pulls remain the same. I can see the transmission maybe being f'ed up if the following occurs:First, by reducing the length of the lever, you can potentially (realistically) reduce the throw of the lever, meaning that you don't have to move it quite as far, but more force must be applied to the shifter for the same amount of torque at the shift linkage. But the shorter throw is why most people install them in the first place.By having to push it harder, but ultimately have a shorter throw, you run the risk of damaging either a shift linkage or the shifter base. That'll kinda screw up your tranny (most people see the transmission as the entire transmission and shift assembly). The other way I can see damaging it is by fully believing that you can slam gears, as Mase mentioned above. Slamming gears can result in grinding. "Good" manual tranny drivers will interpret this as f'ing up the transmission, but that isn't truly the case. Rather, they just never quite adjust to the new throw.Besides, jamming the transmission usually just burns/strips the clutch - that is why it is there and that is why its a consumable part (because you don't want the tranny being the consumable).Lastly, don't s*** where you eat - i.e. don't ask for help and then tell off those you don't agree with. We are all just friends here trying to get along...if something is said try to see how it can be taken non-maliciously because usually that is how it is intended.Not trying to offend or preach, just don't want Genvibe turning into every other forum with the haters...

Since you know what you’re talking about would you recommend a short throw shifter?Secondly, I’m not trying to flame anyone or discredit the forum and the last thing I want to do is waste my time arguing via internet. I absolutely recommend TWM's short throw (not because of the short throw - that is personal preference for some). I like the TWM shifter because the base is metal (not sure if its steel or aluminum, but either is better than the plastic base the stock shifter has).TWM
