what brand of synthetic oil do Pontiac dealerships use?

Post by mspalmer »

I haven't taken my Vibe to the Pontiac dealership for oil changes but am considering it. Unfortunately, I'm not mechanically inclinded in order to do it myself. I've been using Valvoline Full Synthetic for about a year and have no real complaints with it. However, I'm curious what brand my local dealership will use. Does it depend on the individual dealership or does GM recommend a particular brand? Being that it is after 7:30 I thought I would post the question and call them tomorrow. Thanks for any input.Mike

I can't say for sure they all do, but my Pontiac dealer here in MT used Mobile 1.

Mobil 1 is the only synthetic they use at my dealer. I *think* GM recommends Mobil 1 for use in applications where synthetic is necessary so they all would probably have it.There shouldn't be anything stopping them from putting in oil you brought in though, so you could consider doing that... I always used Pennzoil up until the point where I stopped caring about the car, so they always threw that stuff in there instead of what they normally used. The dealer didn't complain about having to do it, and I was getting the oil change done for like $10 since I supplied my own oil.

the GM dealership I worked at before switching to Subaru used Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Oddly enough so does Subaru. I bet their parts department would get you what ever brand you wanted and use that. However my suggestion... buy it yourself and wal-mart and tell the dealership to use supplied oil. You'll save yourself the mark up costs.

All you need is a wrench or rachet, a filter wrench (might even be able to get by without it) and a set of ramps or a jack. I have a jack, but think I'm going to pick up a set of ramps too. Oh, I suppose you need something to drain the oil into... If you're skinny, you might even be able to reach with the car on the ground. Although my drip pan is too tall to get my hand between it and the oil pan to take out the plug. Put a drain pan under the car, take out the drain pan plug and filter, when the oil stops dripping replace the plug and screw on the new filter (not too tight and put oil on the seal), and finally fill'er up with oil. Nothing to it!Saves you some money, and makes ya feel like you accomplished something.
