Air Conditioner Problem?

Post by msmyer »

I took my car in to get some get an oil change a non-dealership shop and I also asked them to look at my A/C. The finding was that I have a leak in my a/c compressor, in which I am loosing my freon. The part is like $40, but the labor is like $2,000. We'll this is what I was told. I don't know much about the a/c unit in the vibe, but it was explained that this is very labor intensive to fix. Anyone had problems? Was there a service bulletin on this? My car is a 2003 Base..... Thanks, Matt

I'm no stranger to A/C failures... I've burned through three compressors and still need a fourth because it still makes noise. They were $568 a pop according to GM Parts Direct, part #88972202. What exactly are they wanting to do with the compressor, and which part is it? That's quite a bit of labor! Each time my compressor was replaced, I stuck around the dealer and ~3 hours or so was the longest time it took them to do the job when they replaced them. If they were wanting to tear the compressor apart and do something with it, it may be more cost effective to replace it.

I would say you could get it completely replaced for that kind of cash. I would go to another place to get it checked. What is it doing that they checked. There is not that many parts that can leek and they are all replaceable in sections.

Have it checked at a dealership, they are less likely to try and scam the unsuspecting. Disclaimer:(Some may disagree with this statement.)

Working in heating and air conditioning, I cannot see $2000 worth of labour.
