Vibe Age Group

Post by billabong_star »

I am 17 and currently looking at Vibes. As of now I own a 2000 Grand Prix and like it alot, my mom is taking it as I go to college next year which is why Im looking at a new car. What do you all think of a Vibe for a teenager?

The gas mileage is one my favorites, I will be driving 30 miles to college every day. I would like AWD, but I think 2WD will be better right now. Vibe's are a little higher than I wanted to pay but if I get a used base I think I can manage. I will be getting $11500 for a down-payment on one which I have found a Satelite colored base (used) with 7100 miles for $13999. Which will leave my payments fairly cheap to pay out the difference. I have test driven one and loved it, I was going towards a Sunfire but for almost the same price I can get a Vibe!

For whatever little amount you have to pay more for a Vibe than Sunfire, it will be made up by your enjoyment and functionality of the Vibe. As for going to college in your car - I sure wish I could have owned a Vibe during my college years - this car screams "Road Trip"!Everyone here is a little bit biased - make up your own mind and enjoy.
Shadow Vibe - two tone (almost no need for the monotone in this color IMHO) - slate interior - power package - moon and tunes - abs - 16" aluminum wheels - and the GD on the radio! http://www.cardomain.com/id/db_vibe

The Vibe is a 4 door, more horsies, more cargo room, just a better overall style and mechanics. Heck, it is a Toyota with a GM shell, nothing could be better. And you are right, it is nice on road trips. Agreed. No bias. No brainer.

I'm 20, in college and have the GT. Man I love this car! It's great for college, road trips, outdoor stuff (not offroading LOL), friends, almost everything. I commute to my school and it is 30 miles away, but I love driving the Vibe. It is so fun to drive, comfortable, good gas mileage, just a great car. You'll definitely enjoy it.Later,

I am going to keep this car for awhile so I wanna make sure I get the right car that I will like for awhile. I've looked at Mustangs, Sunfires, and Jeep Wranglers, and the only thing about the Vibe is it is a little more expensive.

Yeah, which is why I kinda steered away from the Wranglers (15-18 mpg) The Mustang's get the same as my Grand Prix now. I really like the compactness of the Sunfires though.

If I got a Sunfire, I would get a 2-door used, the new are too expensive right now. I've just heard alot of bad stories of Sunfires...

Sunfires are so small...I had a cavalier for years, virtually same car. The Vibe is much more comfy....

I would definately go with the Vibe vs. the Sunfire/Cavalier. You get much better mechanical equipment due to it being Toyota-built compared to the mediocre GM parts used in the Sunfire/Cavalier. I have had my brakes replaced (rotors/pads), almost all the struts and strut mounts, numerous suspension issues, rattles, and other oddities with my Cavalier and it only has 12000 miles.... I had issues from day one and according to NHTSA, the problems have been around since the redesign in 1995.I still regret buying my Cavalier.... no regets on the Vibe whatsoever at this time (8000 miles already). I'm glad to hear other people have not had much trouble with their Cavalier/Sunfire though... but the problems are out there.Good luck with your decision!

I didn't have trouble with my Happy Meal (cavalier). I had it 4 years (1998-Jan.2003) and the only real money I had to put into it was for a catalytic convertor. It had well over 150,000 miles on it. It was well worth the money I spent on it. Paid around 8000 brand new. I don't really regret buying the happy meal, I just regret that I waited until November of 2002 to buy my Vibe. I didn't know how comfy and fun that driving could be 'til I got my Vibe.....

Even "friends" should pay for the ride home. When I was in college many many years ago a "friend" insisted on paying the gas for her ride home, and she was really "friendly" the previous night if you know what I mean.

Few expect that ride to come free. Honestly, doesn't sound like he's charging an exorbitant amount. Figure $3-5 per person for gas, then a little extra for the extra mileage he has to go to pick these people up. Plus you couldn't fedex that stuff to college for less than 20 or 30...so I don't find it unreasonable. When I took some people from Jersey to Boston, I charged them $10 each for gas for the whole trip: I paid about $25 for the whole trip of gas, so I ended up paying $2.50 each way for gas. Can't beat that. And they felt they weren't giving me enough. As for the Vibe being a teen car: I'm 21, and granted, my teen years are behind me. I bought my Sunfire in 01...had the Vibe been around then, I most likely would have gone with it. I got a new car so soon ebcause an accident totalled my sunfire. The car saved me. There was minimal penetration into the passenger cabin. I loved the Sunfire, and with the promise of a newer, safer chassis and body in the next year or two, I'll certainly reconsider it. But the Vibe has proven itself invaluable for moving back and forth to college. It took me 3 trips to move out with the vibe. That would have been about 10 wtih the Sunfire...no lie. If you'e gonna go to college and live on campus, consider the vibe as a move in day lifesaver.I get a lot of compliments on my car from my friends...they love the look, the seats, the roof rack (lots of skiing friends), the in-dash outlet (which has been a lifesaver when I get lost and need my nav software on my notebook PC) and the versatility. I get flack because it's a wagon, but hey, versatility comes as it comes, ya know? Finally, as for the Sunfire sedan, it is no longer offered in the U.S. The sedan is now a Canadian-only model.Let us know if we can offer more insight.

Funny. Every person who's ever knocked on my door wanting a ride has expected it to be free. If I'm already going to Wal-mart or the mall or whereever they want to go, then I don't mind if they ride along, but if I have to take my time and make special trips and lose my parking spot when I don't even need anything myself, then I either won't take them or I demand some sort of payment. I'm not a taxi service.Anyway. The Vibe is an awesome car for moving in and out. I put all of my stuff in Rubbermaid storage bins and I label them, so I can easily get them in and out of the car, and I can tell what's in them. It took my car and my mom's blazer (the small one, not the new TB) one trip each to get it all over here. The cargo room was a big seller for me, aside from the Vibe just being a cool car.I don't call it a wagon. My insurance card does, but most people I ask don't tend to agree with that sentiment...my name for it is SUV-Car.
