Do I have the guts to do this??

Post by rebbierae »

Well, here it is. My boyfriend just bought this bike, and he says I can ride it IF I learn how. At this point I don't even know how to drive a manual CAR so is there any possible way I can learn to drive a motorcycle? I'm scared to death yet excited as he!! at the same time. The South Dakota Safety Council offers classes that everyone says are the best, so I'm looking in to taking one so I can drive that bike. I absolutely LOVE the motorcycle--it's a custom chopper that a friend of Jim's built, and even I would look good on THAT bike! I just hope I have the cojones to follow through and take the class!!

i'm sure anyone can do it! i say go for it! it doesn't take balls to simply ride one!on a side note, the position of those handlebars looks very uncomfortable.

I'd kill myself on one... and lost a friend this spring from a cycle accident. All I can say is... GET TRAINING FIRST! Find driving courses for take lessons. If your scared of driving it then don't.

I say go for it! I have little doubt you'll be able to learn to ride it and the safety class will give you an idea whether or not you'll ever be comfortable on a bike without as much risk as just jumping on and going for it.

LOL DV that made me laugh out loud while I was trying to answer the phone! Believe me, my dad was a volunteer fireman in my small town and I've gotten to go on calls with him so I've seen a couple BAD motorcycle accidents. But first of all, my boyfriend is VERY responsible on the bike--especially when i'm on it. And I KNOW I would be too. This class is very comprehensive--they won't even let you SIT on the motorcycle until you've taken the classroom version, and if you don't know what you are doing, they won't let you start the bike. So I would definitely get the proper training--that's the whole point of taking the class.

is it a loud bike? then those idiots hear you coming lol.I know alaska has a lot of bikes and people here are the worst drivers towards them I have ever seen. Sure my friend was driving fast, but that truck didn't need to make a left turn in front of him either. Learn to be defensive when you drive.

Mrizzle, your 'broke mexican' comments always crack me up! That's one thing...right now I just can NOT afford to buy a bike, but if my boyfriend buys that really cool custom chopper and lets me ride it around, how can I go wrong??

Actually Mav, I think it is a VERY loud bike. I haven't seen or heard it yet, but Jim told me the other day that I'd definitely hear him coming. I guess I'll take the class and if I feel comfortable with it I'll go from there, and if I don't feel comfortable and safe with it, then I'll stay on the back of Jim's bike.

yes, i highly recommend you take classes. here, there are motorcycle classes you can sign up so you can get your license. always always wear a helmet and be very defensive! a lot of cars, SUV's, etc have blind spots and may not see you. it wasn't fun going to our friend's funeral last month, especially after he just turned 22. i hate driving near or by bikes now, always afraid they are gonna crash into me or stop suddenly and i won't have time to react. but then, i want to yell at everyone else around me to watch out for the bike!

That's a nice, clean looking bike, I agree about the bars though.DEFINITELY go for a beginner's course, and see if your BF has a friend with something a little less pretty to learn on, should there be an unfortunate incident between you and the pavement.Bikes are great for an absolute feeling of freedom and fun.Being scared and excited is actually a good thing IMHO, when you are learning to ride.ALL car drivers (yes, including VIBE owners) should be considered dangerous and the enemy of motorcycles. Some car drivers just don't pay attention.Once you learn the basics, you will be a motorcycle rider for life.It does however, totally suck riding in the rain, and when it's REALLY cold.

I STILL don't get it. Well, I did it. I signed up for the class. I'll be taking it in mid-May. I'm scared as hell, excited, and...I'm not sure what else! So, unless I chicken out, I'll be riding a motorcycle in about a month--VERY scary!

Congrats, good luck and all that stuff. You'll do fine with it, I'm sure. But if you get into the class and decide that you can't/don't want to ride a bike then at least you can say you tried it and you did't spend a bunch of money on a bike to find that out.

I am going to the tech school near my house maybe this next summer to get the bike liscense. I am hoping to get my bike within the next year or two. I suggest to ride with someone for a while first to get used to it. I go to bike showes all the time and I think that it's a blast if you do it safe.

Well, if I live through the class and like it, I'll have to see if Jim can find me a cheap little Yamaha to ride around. I have to get a Yamaha because I already have a Yamaha leather jacket, from when Jim had his RS Warrior. Can't be seen riding a Honda in a Yamaha jacket!!

Well, at this point it has nothing to do with wimping out. My Dad died on May 1 and it has pretty much made my world fall apart, so I'm just not in the right frame of mind at this point to do it. And I dont like heat so being out in full leather when it's 97 degrees doesn't sound fun either, so that leaves Fall.

oh ya, i'm sorry about that. that's right, you told me that a week or so ago. well, maybe you just need to take some time off and heal. it may do you some good. but then again, maybe it would be good for you to get involved with something new to take your mind off of things? and i don't like the heat either, so i wouldn't want to be out in 97 ° F weather either! especially with long sleeves, pants and a helmet!

rebbierae, First let me say I'm sorry for your loss.Second, that is a really a beautiful bike, Choppers are not my style but that's a beauty.I think you answered your own question get a small, cheap but reliable Yamaha that you don't mind dropping in the driveway. Something that if you scratch the tank is no big deal. Then go take the riders course and then ride for a year or two before you jump on that big long Chopper. That is what my wife did and now she's on a big ol' Honda Valkryie and rides longer and farther than I do. Just my .02

Thanks Viberrrr....this has definitely been the toughest time of my life. Just don't feel like I'd get much out of the class right now, but I do want to take it. Thanks for the kudos on the bike--honestly, it really isn't MY style either but he likes it--it makes him happy--and that is what matters to me. I just need to go check a few out and see what's comfortable to me. But I can't afford to buy one any time soon so I don't need to be falling in love with one yet!

If your vertically challanged like many women are you should look into the Yamaha Virago. Great bikes and have a low seat. Or even the Honda Rebel it's only a 250cc but a great starter bike. When your ready I'll give more info on a few Chat forums that have tons of women riders. Wonderfull folks and a great source of info for all your questions.
