rust spot removal

Post by jeffbacon »

I've got a couple of small (1cm in diameter - see attached pic) rust spots on my Vibe that were caused by rocks hitting the paint, chipping it and not being repaired. They were there when I bought my car a month ago. Does anyone have any tips for removing/repairing them? I have a bottle of touch up paint from the dealer but I want to remove the rust and put a filler in first I think.

my old car had some rust spots. I sanded them down and around them to make sure i got all the rust. then primed the metal, painted it and you'll have to spay on some clear coat.

Usually the rust protection is for rust through the panel. Plus rock chips do not count and are not covered since it was caused by the rock even for cars under the warranty. Honesty, I would try and pick or scratch out as much rust as you could, clean it real well after and then prime and paint it. Get a bottle of touch up primer... A Dremel tool with the wire brush may work but you will need a very steady hand!Rub out the rust film that is around the chip to get rid of that. Fill the chip a few time to build up the paint. If you really start picking at is you will make it larger and really noticeable. I would try the above first and watch it. If it comes back then go to plan B.
