Orbix's new ride...

Post by orbix »

Well, I finally got fed up with the Vibe (just not quite right for me), so I'm trading it in and coming home with this baby (plus about $5k- should keep everything running perfectly for quite some time) 1983 Porsche 944Normally aspirated, every suspension and engine option available at the time (stock CAI, headers, limited-slip rear differential, euro-spec suspension, etc.).It's a hell of a fun car to drive- Not the fastest thing out there, but it handles like a dream, and it sticks to the road like nothing I've ever been in.Oh, and it gets 30mpg.

I have to say, one of the things that I looked around for quite a bit was a good forum... Found some good ones, but GenVibe kicks the crap out of just about everything else I've found.

Nice find! Unless you're a Porsche mechanic, go quickly and invest the $5k in some high-yield investment. My friend inherited a 928 (the front engine 32-valve V8 Porsche of the same era). It was great until he shredded the cam belt. They wanted about $5k to tear down the engine, plus extra for the parts that might be needed to repair it! He parked it.

My 2003 Vibe Base Auto 2-tone Salsa "SalsaWagon" was built in May 2002. I acquired it in Feb 2004/Traded it in on a 2016 Honda HR-V in Feb 2018.

*laugh*Yeah, there's a bit of risk in these things...However, the 944 NA (non-turbo) is one of the easier to work on Porsches out there, and it's been meticulously cared for in virtually all respects. The 928, while sweet, is particularly rare and complicated, meaning $$$$$ for repairs of any kind.I figure that the $5k will be around for the sole purpose of maintaining this one- I'll probably put up to $1k into restoring it (The seats are a bit worn from being that old, and they're not leather, and some random little things need replacing due to age.). Everything beyond that stays in the bank.Besides, I'll be doing the majority of the work myself anyhow, so that should save a lot of money. (Timing belt replacement- religiously every 30k mi due to the interference design of the engine- costs $1,500 at a shop, but it's a $500 tool (one-time expense) and a $30 belt. And 8-12 hours of work, but that's free, right? )The hard part now is the waiting- I'm waiting to get the title to the Vibe shipped to me from my parents (I've never had a reason to have it until now) before I can go through with the whole process...
