Today I'm driving home from work (6 miles 50 MPH) and i pull up to the stop light and I hear this grinding squeal in the front brakes and I'm a 1/2 mile from home, I chance it and get home. my son is standing in the driveway with this horrible look on his face, and asks whats that noise? I stopped and backed up a foot or so and jacked the car up and removed the tires and free wheeled the hubs, nothing not a squeak then I jacked up the rear and rotated the rear drums, nothin not a sound. all I can think of is a rock or something got wedged between the front rotor and dust shield. scared the crap out of me when I heard it.
Could just be brake dust. When you wash your car once a week do you flush out the caliper/rotors? They may not make any noise when jacked up and freewheeling.

If it only makes the noise when the brakes are applied then it could be the squeaker on the brakes telling you to change them. what did the rotor look like smooth or scored
2005 AWD What's your story? It's a wonderful thingMomma always said "Help that is not helpful, is no help at all"
I did have my brakes squeek like that when the brake piston wouldnt release correctly. so the brake on a rotor would be semi applied when driving normally.
I'd say a rock or something got stuck between the backing plate and the rotor when you were driving. I've seen this happen before since they use sand up here in alaska and not salt.

I have AWD 2005 31 DEC 2005- got a b. new. The brakes squeak since the beginning. I was told that Gm is using the porcelain brakes and they have lots of people coming with the same problem even on other models. I will check with a dealer next time I go for oil change.
