Blown Infiniti?

Post by shane_c »

I had some infiniti reference (6012i) 6.5" speakers installed about 3 weeks ago in the front and back of my vibe. I noticed on the ride to work this morning that the front passenger speaker has quite a bit of distortion. It's strange though because sometimes it sounds fine then it'll start distorting and sound hollow. I'm only running the factory (base) HU. I usually only listen to either the radio or Jimmy Buffett. Never anything that's hip hop or heavy with bass. I usually have the volume at the start of the third set of bars (1/2 way?) and my settings are bass +4, mid +3, treble +6. Does it just sound like a defective speaker or do you think it's blown? I wouldn't think the factory HU would blow them since it doesn't seem that powerful and I don't play it that loud. Thoughts?

You can blow a speaker by underpowering it, sure. It sounds like it could be something in the amplifier, as well, if it only happens sometimes.. Once a speaker is blown it generally stays that way.

If it was something with the amp wouldn't it sound like that through all the speakers? Since they've been installed less than 30 days they'll replace them for me.

If you can get them replaced, go for it.And no, it's perfectly possible for only one channel to die. Unlikely in the stock radio, but I had an external amplifier that did that.. As said, anything is possible. First, if you can get them replaced free, try that.

Everything seems to be working fine now. It was only acting up that one morning. The last few times I was in the car it sounded fine, even if I turned the deck up all the way it was crystal clear with no distortion. So maybe it's some sort of problem with the factory deck. Who knows.
