Hey guys, I've been considering trading in my Vibe because I'm truly sick of my automatic transmission. I bought it with auto as a compromise with my wife, whom we thought would be driving it from time to time, and she hates a manual. Well, she never drives it, and now that she just got a new Hyundai Tuscon, she'll never drive it again. So, here's the deal. I love my car, except for the tranny. Yes, I could trade it in, but that would be an awfully expensive way to get a stick ($10,000 for a new economy car). So, I'm wondering just how difficult and expensive it is to have a transmission swapped out. I have no idea what all would be involved. I thought about trying to find a wrecked Vibe to save some $$$, if the tranny was in decent shape, but then again, it might just be cheaper in the long run to buy a new unit. I dunno.Any mechanics out there wanna' throw me a bone?~Z

Don't know if it is a direct swap, but I changed out a 6 speed the other day and it was not hard, I would look at the Celica 2000-2005 sites and see if any threads on doing what you are asking. It may be possible pretty easily

It's do-able, but looking at some of the previous threads on this it seems like you would need a bunch of parts:transaxleclutch disc and pressure plate (can get a kit)clutch pedalflywheel (people say to use new bolts)axles (I know they are different part numbers for 5 speed and base auto)Don't know if there is a different combo brake/clutch master cylinder between the two, if so then you'll need oneclutch slave cylinder (and piping)clutch to start safety switch (hopefully wiring is already there)Supposedly a different ECU/PCMShift linkagesShiftershifter trim piecehopefully the connectors for reverse and speedo are the same between the two tranniesI suppose it's possible there's a difference in transaxle/motor mountsloctiteprobably a handful of token little parts that won't be obvious until you have it all taken apart
Sheesh... that sounds seriously complicated. I know I couldn't do it, and I bet the shop would charge me out the @$$ for parts and labor. Maybe it actually would be cheaper to trade in!Thanks for the input.~Z
