Rattle in center dash at medium RPM annoying as hell sound familiar?

Post by Train »

I have a rattle in my dash at around 3-5 thousand rpm (maybe higher than that also but i don't really know ). I know there has been a few threads on this but has any one found the problem? or even better the fix? my dealer states that this is an abnormal driving condition, (I would like to see one of them pull on to a busy road and not hit 4 grand on the tach ). any way i have a vibe gt and the 6 disc in the dash. it sounds like a plastic on plastic noise. dealer has tryied (for what little thats worth ) to fix it with no luck.

by the way nothing like the temp or rain or AC settings seem to effect this, it happens pretty much every time the tach hits the right range and the engine vibrations makes it rattle. And i have tryed the usual ways of solving vibration noises with no luck. but if i could get one look under the dash i bet i could find it.

I've got the same rattle that you do, and got the same BS excuse from the dealer. Seems like the rattle is getting worse though, as it's occurring now even if I'm in 6th gear doing 55mph. So, I'll be calling the dealer (again) to complain about it.

Same rattle/buzz for me in the same range. For me, I have to drive down a road for about 25 minutes in the "buzz" RPM range.I am going to yank the radio area apart this weekend using the direction given here in anticipation of a XM install.

I recall in the past it was determined that rattle is from the daytime running light module, which is located somewhere between the steering wheel and the radio...Gotta rip the whole dash out to get to it...one of my projects for the spring...

thanks for the tip about the drl but i thought it was attached right above the brake pedal. my noise is coming from the dash right in the center and maybe a foot back from the front of the radio area.

The DRL module is above the brake pedal, you can easily get to it by removing the bottom of the steering column. The module that ragingfish was referring to is the Cruise Control module, which is behind the instrument cluster, to the left. I have the same rattle behind my radio, but I've no idea what it is. My guess is it might be the vents rubbing against something..

don't mean to keep crossing out your alls suggestions but the drl is about a foot above the pedal and the cruise is about 8 inches behind the instrument cluster. this noise that i have and i think many others have it, it about 8 or so inches behind the radio right in the center of the car.

I have this annoyance as well, but mine seems to be coming from the base of the windshield (where windshield and dash meet) right in the middle.

I have the same problem. Mine also comes from the base of the window and dash area about dead center. Same BS from the dealer. Make a tech ride with you so he can hear it. I did this for another rattle in the cluster and they solved that problem the next day. It was a loose retaining clip, thats annoying.

well after 4 trips to the dealer and basically getting BS everytime, i guess they decided i was not leaving tell it got fixed. They heared the noise from day one but just kept trying to say the noise was from high rpm driving and was just going to happen. but after talking with some upper ups at the dealer, the service department finally took out the radio area, and added some foam spacer/shims into the spots where the air duct and vent for the windsheild touched loosleys against anything. works great no noise every gear from idle to red line. I put the car through it all and i can't get it to make the noise at all its great to finally hit lift without some buzzing noise in the dash. Thanks, for the tips and such, Train and sorry about the spelling and grammer

Quote, originally posted by Train »They heared the noise from day one but just kept trying to say the noise was from high rpm driving and was just going to happen. This is an absurd excuse. I will laugh in their face if they try to tell me this. Let's see, the engine is designed to run up to about 8250 RPM, but the rest of the car can't handle 3000 or above. That's a joke! Then why would they stress the performance aspect of the Vibe GT when the power is made after 6200 RPM? "Well, the car makes all its' power after 6200 RPM, the engine is designed to handle up to about 8250 RPM, but if you drive it over 3000 RPM it will shake itself to pieces". That is the equivalent of what they are saying. I'd love to run that by them and hear what the next poor excuse is.

I have a starnge rattle/vibe-ration noise coming from my dash above the steering wheel in the instrument cluster area. I have 600 miles on my GT and it drives me nuts. It starts at around 3,000 RPM. The extended warranty I have says it doesn't cover any type of noises like that but seeing as I still have 2 years of the original factory warranty left they should be able to do something. Considering my brother is a mechanic there I'm hoping they don't give me a hard time. I kind of feel like I'm being a pain as it's not very loud but loud enough to hear over moderate stereo level and driving to drive someone absolutely friggin' nuts. My Jeeps both make tons of noises, louder noises, but they are all bearable.I can compare the noise to that sound Jim Carey makes in Dumb and Dumber.

drive back to the dealer. take a repairman for a ride, thentell the sales rep you refuse delivery on a defective car. they'll fix it.
