I haven't tested the distance on mine yet, but I think I have been at least a hundred feet away. I will try it and see how far I can be away from it later today.

What I usually do is set fire to the car just the lane accross from my car. Then when I come out, I just look for the fire engines. You can see those over most SUVs.
