The problem is, the laws differ from state to state and so does the enforcement. All tag covers are illegal in the District and in Maryland. In Virginia, it is illegal to cover your license plate with anything tinted. In the District, WTOP not only found illegal tag covers on D.C. police cars, but on police officer's personal cars as well."Thanks to your reporting we discovered vehicles in our fleet that had the covers on," Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Kevin Morison said. "We're making sure that the ones we know about are taken care of immediately and taking steps to ensure that all of our vehicles have an unobstructed tag and no coverings on the tags at all."Covering a license plate in D.C. carries a $500 fine."We're also getting the word out to our officers that on their personal vehicles that they need to be following the law," Morison said. "It's unacceptable. We ought to be setting the standard and leading by example."In Maryland, tag covers -- whether they are tinted or clear -- are illegal, with a fine of $60. However, when it came to defining license plate covers, officials in the state all interpreted the law differently.A spokesperson for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration said covering a license plate means placing something over it, while Montgomery County Police and Maryland State Police said the law applies to anything that obstructs the tag.WTOP found several Montgomery County officers with tag covers on their personal cars.Montgomery County Police spokesperson Crpl. Sonia Pruitt said the following in a written statement:"We appreciate that you brought the issue to our attention. Montgomery County Police Officers are required to follow the same laws as the rest of our community. To ensure compliance we have directed our district station command staff to review the issue with our police officers."In Virginia, WTOP discovered several police officers' personal cars baring tinted covers. Fines in Virginia can go up to $200 for license plates covered with anything tinted.(I added the bold)so, the cop ould have gone easy on you, and it sure seems like once he pulled you over he was in the mood to generate some revenue, but in the end, you were a law breaker and he is technically justified for issuing a citation. $200 is steep though, hope they don't hit you up for the full fine.
