Trashed Tranny

Post by burkeyro »

My Manual Transmission Base had a transmission whine. I took it into the Dealer a couple of times for it and they told me that everything was fine. Now I have Grinding when downshifting into 2nd, and under normal driving there is a rattle/grinding noise, and at Highway speeds The whine is getting louder. I had the Tranny oil changed at 30,000 miles, the place told me that it was the worst they had ever seen. The car now Has 39,000 miles and technically out of warrenty. They want me to pay $300 bucks just to take it appart and see what is wrong with it. I'm so angry I could spit fire. Does anyone know if there has been White papers or recalls on the tranny? Any suggestions/advise on if the dealership wants to hassle me on not wanting to cover it under warrenty, seeing that I had brought it in for the same thing multiple times?

Ask to speak to the service manager at the dealership. Explain that you were in for service regarding the transmission multiple times, while the car was still under warranty, yet his service technicians said it was fine. This should be a case of "good will warranty" where they fix it because it's the right thing to do.If you don't get a satisfactory answer with the service manager, ask to speak to the dealership's general manager, owner, then the district service manager (who works for GM, not the dealership), it that order. It's sort of climbing the chain of command. Eventually, you should find somebody who will listen. Worst case scenario, we get Jeff Strausser (the Vibe Brand Quality Manager with GM) involved - ask NSimkins if you need to pass a message along to Jeff.

sounds like you have a bearing problem. I had one of those at the shop I work at on an 04 Vibe with 30,000km on it already. Obviously his was warranty. If I were you I'd fight for at least goodwill assistance to help with the repair since you complained about it before.

sounds like a syncro problem, the dealer should be looking at it due to you have it on record that you had a concern while under warranty.

If the problem was looked at and not resolved and it is on record there should be no problem getting the work done under warranty. I had several such issues with my GMC truck and they were resolved by simply pointing out the fact that the problem had been looked at previously when under warranty. They checked their records and fixed it no charge. The $300.00 fee mentioned is what it would cost to look at it if it were not covered. Make sure they agree to honour the warranty before any work is done.

Been MIA for a While - If anyone is interested - I did speak with the Service manager and worked it out - They covered it and I only had to pay a $100.00 deductible. The problem was the Final Drive Bearing. About 2 months later a nice new problem developed where I can't down shift into 2nd gear when I'm over 15 mph. I just want to say I officially hate GM. I've had 5 GM's out of 14 car total. Had nothing but probems with GM and their Service People. Now I know the "innerds" of the Vibe are all Toyota, but my point is the GM "Certified" people worked on it and F'd it up. I should have just forked out the money and took it to the Toyota guys. IMO GM sux. that's why alot of the old timers have their Retirement threatened (My Dad). but that is another rant for another Thread. My 2 cents

my reliable toyota tranny went out also for bearing problems, but I was @ 75K miles, waranty not an option. The toyota folks say they don't rebuild these trannies, just replace them. Does double clutching help downshift into second?

nope - I'm going to replace the tranny - I want to find out what would be involved in putting the 6 speed into the Base model. but that's another project for another day - need to do some research on the 2xx and 1zz differences, blah blah blah

The 6 speed is actually geared a bit lower than the 5 speed, at least the top gear is, so you'll get lower mpgs. Then there's all the 6 speed clutch problems ...But others have thought about doing it, so if you go for it, be sure to take lots of pics and let us know how it turns out.

Clutch problems in the 6-speed - didn't know that - well it's going to be a while before I can even think of really doing anything else except replacing the current clutch - Everything is on hold it seems like - at least until the Wedding is over, and that's not till september - hope my clutch holds out until then.
