So as some of you may have read a few months ago, I spun a rod and main bearing in my 2ZZ. After 3.5 months, I have my car back...Long story short, machine shop thought crank could be machined, but then couldn't get bearings to fit machined crank. New crank put in...among other ignorancies...The list of new parts goes something like this:New stock crankNew stock pistonsNew stock rodsNew stock water pumpNew oil gearMWR HD bearing setSPEC stage 1 clutch...and other random goodies.I got the car back, broke it in, and was throwing 2 CEL's: P1346 and P1349...both relating to misfire/VVT-i malfunction...actually, not working at all...The timing was off by 2 teeth in front and 1 tooth in back. The shop dug into it again and got her all straightened out.I just got back from a trip up to NYC. It ran great the whole way there and back. The clutch is ridiculous! Well worth the money spent! The bottom end and midrange feels better than it ever did. Really strong pull. I haven't ventured up into lift yet. Only touched it through about 6500 rpm. Gonna wait 'til I get a few more miles on her.So after $3200 and 3.5 months without a car, I know have a new old car...VOTM watch out!
Sorry to hear about your misfortune, and I hate to burst your bubble, but about a month and a half ago I snapped a rod, cracked the front of the engine, blew a hole out the back of the engine, filled the oil pan with metal and pretty glitter, and less than $1200 later I have replaced the engine with a lower mileage engine and it should be on the road today good as new if I get everything finished up! Even the 2zz's here were only about $1500 used and the yards were willing to swap them in right there for $350. Just $0.02, but for anyone who runs across a situation like this down the road, might look into all your options before making a decision. Yours may have been covered under warranty, but from the sounds of it wasn't. Glad to hear you're back on the road again though and I hope I join you today!

The stock 2zz is actually very strong except for the oil pump and needs the stock main pulley. The tranny will explode before the motor's at its limit.

OK, here's some of the answers to the questions asked:Why stock rods/pistons?Only manufactureer out there after EXTENSIVE searching on my end and the speed shop who did the work was Wiseco. I could have had some custom forged, but without a stand-alone ECM, a higher CR (12:1) would do no good. Plus the block would have to be resleeeved. Why rebuild and not salvage 2ZZ?I didn't want to take a chance on the motor I would get. Who knows who had and how it was treated. Could have been over-revved in accident, oil may never have been changed, etc...just not worth it to have do the whole process over again.
