SR install done some ?s

Post by dave9382 »

I just installed my Cosmo Short Ram on Sunday. It seemed to be working great and running fine. I was not even getting a Check Engine Light after I installed it. I even drove several places out to dinner etc, and to work today and no light and it was running fine. However when I drove home from work today about 2 minutes into the drive the Check engine light comes on. It still seemed to be driving just fine but the light never went off. When I got home I rechecked the connections etc and they all seemed secure and no hose had come loose or anything.I was just wondering is this normal behavior to get an intermittent CEL for a few days?? I was under the impression that generally the people got the CEL right after install and it lasted a few days while the air flow sensor got used to the new air, I just didn't know if anyone knew what mine could be doing.

1) Did you disconnect the battery during the install to reset the ECU?2) If, so. After you were done did you start and let the engine idle for 10 minutes , shut it off for one minute and then start it and drive it?This will allow the MAF and ECU to adjust to the new air flow.If not, try the whole procedure of #1 and then #2 . Then see if you get a CEL again.I forget, what year is your Vibe?

Make sure your VSV valve is installed correctly if you removed it and put it back in like I did during the install. It was attached to the top of your air box, has a cap that should be on the bottom if it is in right.

Good point, Jason, I forgot about that one.Yeah, make sure the VSV is vertical and not on its side.

After the install I let the car idle for like 2 hours actually. I then drove it to a restaurant. While I was eating it was off for at least 30 minutes, then I came back out and drove it home, still no CEL. I didnt get the CEL still several stops and starts later. The only pipeing I hooked to the new cosmo intake was the breather hose to the engine because thats all it said to do. It did look like there was a little valve (that has two rubber pipes running into) that should fit into the little hole on the filter end of the cosmo intake. I had just left the rubber cap covering that hole and didnt put the little valve in that looks like it goes there. Of course the cosmos instructions were crap as you all well know.Is what Im describing sound like the VSV valve (it had had a sensor plugged into it that the cosmos instructions told me to leave hanging out...) to you guys?Sorry for the newbness. Thanks for your help.So far the car has been driving great I just want to make sure Ive got it all hooked up right.

As always, it's a lot easier to get the code pulled so you know EXACTLY what's wrong. It's a lot faster than playing the guessing game with the rest of the forum.Autozone will do it for free.

I have learned to live with the cel, there seems to be nothing I can do to keep it off..

Take a pic of your engine compartment, emphasize on the area where the VSV is/was and those hoses. If you removed the VSV I'm pretty sure that's it. If you didn't hook it back up right that too would be it. I'm not sure I'm following what you did during this install and a pic is worth 1000 words!

sounds like im going to try plugging that valve in where it looks like it should go on the intake pipeeven though cosmos instructions didnt mention anything about it after they told me to take it off the stock box.. Ill see if that fixes it, good ole trial and error might work.. As long as I dont break my engine

In order to get this valve plugged in I gotta get a stripped screw out. Is it gonna hurt me any to drive around a few more days with the VSV valve hanging out and the CEL on?... It doesnt sound like there are any problems and it is driving fine I just want to be sure b/c Ive already been driving on it like this for 3 or 4 days. I dont have time to mess with it until the weekend..

Hey-I just installed my Cosmo SR too....there is a fitting that is capped off up towards the air-filter that the instructions never mentioned....What hose was intended to fit this fitting?????

im thinking its the little valve that has two hoses going into it that goes in there. Im about to go out and experiment.. But how terrible are cosmos instructions for us non mechanically inclined?

The VSV? The directions said to zip tie that to the firewall.....and never said anything about removing the two hoses from it. I've just left that little fitting capped off and everything seems to be working great. No CEL and there is an apparent boost in HP. I have a feeling that cosmo makes a universal pipe that is intended for more than one application....

do you guys have the MAF sensor mounted in the hole with the 2 screws?and the vsv should just be zip tied to something close to where its hanging.

ya the maf is in, (otherwise the car would not be sounding right). The vsv, I had just hanging out and it looks like thats the only way to have it, I had it zip tied with the two hoses that go into it secure,The car is running fine am just still getting check engine light.. I noticed where my 15 mm breather hose (which connects to my engine) connects to my intake the connection seemed a little loose, im gonna try going to the hardware store and getting a clamp for the end of that hose other than that I am stumped

When I first put my CAI in I used to get cels all the time, I just unhooked the battery for a minute and it cleared them, I haven't had a cel for a year or so. but my vsv resonates thru the CAI and makes a pook pook pook sound when the vsv switches (i think the VSV is bad but GM disagrees). everyone says "that doesn't sound right" nothing wrong though and it only does it at Idle.
