Not gonna be a coal miner

saw on the news today that in mexico there was a coal mine explosion... and soo from this i have determined that when i get out of the army i am NOT i repeat not gonna be a coal miner... that's like 3 major incidents in the last like 3 months

Well, if you do end up in a mine, you're much safer here than elsewhere... In China, they lost close to 6,000 people in coal mining related accidents last year... All too frequently I'm hearing about yet another accident that doesn't take 1 or 10 lives, but more like numbers of 100 or more in most of these accidents... We don't hear about it much here, but it is a huge problem over there. Safety takes a back seat to progress...It was hard enough with the unfortunate events we've had to deal with here lately, I don't see how those folks can cope with losses of that magnitude! This is a horrible job to have, that's for sure. My heart goes out to everyone out there who is in danger or to those who have lost loved ones doing this dirty work.

Even with all the safety training and systems in mining today, it is still one of the most dangerous jobs in America. I can't even imagine what it was like 100+ years ago when my great-grandfathers were coal miners. The most high-tech safety device was a poor little canary.
