All your halogen are belong to Xenon - HID Projectors INSTALLED!

Post by cybermob2 »

cost a lot of dough, took a lot of time, but oh, oh oh so worth it.BMW E46 (3-series) Xenon projectors, shrouds, and ballasts, Osram bulbs. these are single (low beam only), although later i will upgrade to a bi-xenon projector when they come down in price.my fogs are worthless now, so i suppose i will find some hella bright driving lights and replace my fogs with them, aiming them as my high beam (which means low/high simultaneously too!) now taking recommendations.nice thing is the cutoff is really effective, i have about maybe 1/3 farther vision than with the stockers with 1/2 the glare.

Those lights look fantastic!!! Can you give us some details on what it takes to modify our headlights to accept these?

really, its not that bad.every projector is different, but these all i needed to do was cut off the bulb retainer spring mounts (the bosses on the rear of the reflector).the projector reflector fits nice and snug into the bulb opening, then its just a matter of aiming is as best you can and putting 3 bolts through the reflector.you do need to be careful in the left/right adjustment, as our housing have NO side to side adjustment. after i installed the projectors, i put the back part of the housing back into the car, and did 90% of the tweaking before putting the housings back together.really its pretty slick... the bi-xenon projectors i've seen are quite a bit bigger and may pose more of a problem by sticking out further (making bulb access a crapper)i loosely followed some of the googleable how-to pages for the most part.

i don't know how much he would charge, but a set of bmw projectors on ebay go for about 150$. if you still want to drive your vibe while he made them, you would need to buy a second set to send him. or he would buy them. another 100$. custom work at 15$/hr for a entire weekend.. (calculating).. 635$ with 12 hr wrk days on sat and sunday. plus 25 shipping and handling on projectors.i gottta get my lazy (removed) up and do them too. been thinking about it forever.

in the future i may consider modding them for people. there are some glitches i need to work out.1st... in my case, i need to disable the DRLs, which i've unsuccesfully done so far. plan is to cop out and defeat the parking brake switch. i noticed with the brake on, the auto-lights still work (NICE!). i snipped the red/black wire, and grounded the yellow one on the DRL module (not sure what that did!). reduced voltage DRL will kill relays and bust up everything. STUPID DRLS!!!!2nd... the wiring in the vehicle runs off a negatively switch ground(12V constant, high gnd, low gnd). plays havoc trying to scheme a high/low bi-xenon solenoid stalk controlled.3rd... i lost my high beams. my fogs could NEVER compete with my low beams, in fact you can't tell when they are on/off. my solution for high beams will likely be 4" driving lights in place of the fogs. i should be able to aim and wire them to function as pretty nice high beams, especially since it will be high/low at same time.on the nice side, i built a sweet plug and play fully pigtailed, soldered wiring harness for these babies. very OEMish.

If you do this project, wouldnt you need a stock pair of headlights, since HID/projectors on cars that didnt come with them from the factory is illegal and wont pass inspection?
