Hey all - Trying to determine if this is normal, or a problem with MY Vibe... I'm thinking it probably a problem. Anyway, bought the car 3 months ago at 35k. Had the oil changed immediately and checked myself to verify that it was topped off.I'm now at the 3 month mark and have put 5k on the car. I'm going to take it in for a change, but I checked the level tonight and it's only 1/3 of the way up from the bottom notch. It dropped 2/3 of the way down from the top notch to the bottom notch over the last 3 months.I haven't noticed any drips in the garage, but I'm going to put some cardboard under there to make sure...Also, I checked the level after running the car for around 40 minutes, turning it off in a flat garage and letting it sit for 10 minutes... proper?Any tips, hints, things to check, look at, etc? Thanks!
I haven't noticed any significant oil loss in mine. I usually check it when the engine is cold, not sure how long it takes to all drip back down but 10 minutes is probably plenty. If all you want to do is check the oil level, skip the "running the car for around 40 minutes" part.
My Vibe uses some oil between changes. I would say that it loses .5qt for each 5000 miles. I run Mobil1 in mine, and usually add some between changes. There are no drips, I think it is consumed. My 8.1 engine in my Yukon XL uses 1qt of oil every 2500 miles. GM says that 1 qt every 1000 is fine. I have 86k miles on mine. I have never had any problems.
I think the difference between the top an bottom marks on the dip stick is equal to 1 qt. It appears you are using only 2/3 qt. in 5000 miles which I would think is not bad at all. I'm (removed) about changing oil and filter, so when the color of the oil starts to darken a little I change it, so I don't see a drop in the oil level. These ULEV engines run very clean and have superb ring seal (less blow-by). Since four qts. and a filter run $11, plus 20 min. of my time, I think it's cheap preventative maintenance to maintain clean oil.Again, I wouldn't think your oil consumption is a concern at all. Just keep on checking the level regularly, like you have been.
Mine doesn't use a drop, near as I can tell. Okay - I'm sure it does, but not enough to reflect on the dipstick....Bought it with 18k kms on the clock, just over 89k now, oil changes at 5k, using Mobil1

What brand and weight of oil are you using? It may be as simple as changing brands. To learn more about oil visit http://theoildrop.server101.co...;f=42
Mine doesn't use any through 3,000, however if I go beyond that, it will start to gradually drop... The last two oil changes I let slide beyond 5,000 miles and the level dropped about 1/4 of a quart...
