Going with a Custom Turbo Set-up for only $2K

Post by BlueCrush »

NOTE: Found a local shop to do it for $2K and it is only this cheap because I already have the eManage and custom exhaust already installed. Otherwise it would be closer to $2800.I am going to start saving for a custom turbo set-up from a local shop called "The Boost Factory". Just talked to the owner for 45 minutes and he can set me up with a Garrett GT28R, custom log manifold, intertcooler and piping, and everything else I need to get the 5psi (200hp +/-) I am wanting for $2000. I almost shat myself when he told me the cost.I already have the eManage and will just send it to Matt @ MWR for a turbo tune before I have the turbo installed and I will be good to go. I am not going to have it done until late spring/early summer when I have the full amount saved up. I want to pay it in cash and not finance it. I can't wait until then. I am still going to get my e-Manage & Camcon Dyno tuned. I also found a Tuning shop that is moving to a new location that will be 5 minutes from me and they are getting a brand new AWD dyno the second week of March. I will be one of the first one's on it and will be getting an awesome deal on dyno tuning as well. So, I would like to suggest to all the people who are wanting a turbo to explore the option of having a local speed shop price one out for you. You just might be surprised at how much lower the cost will be vs. a prefab kit going for $3500+/-.It's going to be a fun summer with one of the only boosted AWD/4WD Vibe/Matrix's. Are there any other boosted AWD/4WD's?Today was a good day! :D

Awsome!Congratulations on finding your shop!It sounds good to me, and yes, I do like the idea of going local. It keeps accountability close dealing with people face to face.Plus, there are so many fabbing issues and problem solving when installing a kit, that it often becomes a 50% custom job anyway. You might as well start with a custom set-up. Some people may think that the 2k price is too low.Just go price the items seperatly. Garrett 28R=800.00intercooler =300.00Yet with a shop like this, They will make their own IC's for less, and who knows how cheap they can get turbo's. If they know what they are doing, they can do this job for 2k and still make money! Blue Crush, what about injectors? Are you going to get new ones? or are you going to add a 5th one?Or, are you going to go to 5 psi on stock injectors?I have stock injectors, but I really up the fuel pressure to get enough fuel, and I have an additional fuel pump. Are they going to move the MAF? Are you going to have a BOV?Finally, You are going to have sooo much fun! ...PS...I am only boosting 4psi right now 'till I replace my turbo....and it is still pretty fun!...5psi will be a blast to drive!

Thanks, Faultline!Yeah, I was getting some flack on MO about the cost. But they didn't realize that I already have the eManage and custom exhaust from the downpipe back. Their pricing for the GT28R=$750, Log Manifold=$250 and Intercooler=$200. As for injectors, I bought Rio Trix's (on MO) 2ZZ grey injectors which are a direct fit on the 1ZZ. (1ZZ=200cc,2ZZ=320cc) and will be using an upgraded fuel pump or an additional in-line fuel pump. I am going to have them locate the MAF right before the TB where it should be to work properly. I will also have a GReddy Type "S" BOV. I can't wait to boost. I was going to start buying parts as I find deals but after talking with the shop owner, there is no way I would be able to find prices better than theirs. So, I just have to save it up and get it done. Good Luck with replacing your Turbo!!

My Maf is right before the TB as well, and so, as youre heading along the last IC piping toward the TB , you run into the bov, then the MAF, and the the water injection port. If you do WI, it needs to be after the MAF. At 5 psi, you wont need that because you have an intercooler.I have an inline fuel pump up by the fuel rail, and it was really loud. It came on right when the ignition turned on....just a nice high pitched mosqito. Now , their is a by pass fuel line that is plumbed right before the inline fuel pump, then the line comes back in righ after the inline fuel pump. the bypass line has a check valve. The pump does not turn on now till I am in boost. That way I dont ever hear it.When the pump is off , the fuel flow thru the bypass fuel line as it is the path of least resistance, when the pump is on, fuel flows thru it , of course. The check valve keeps the the fuel from flowing back thru the bypass line when the pump is on. The pump is referenced to a hobbs pressure switch that is plumbed into an IC pipe. It turns the inline pump on at the 1st sign of boost. I am only saying all this to let you know that you may not like all the racket an inline pump makes. It is not a big deal to do what I did, but it would be best to ask you turbo guys to do it in the first place when they are fabbing the IC pipes,(to make a port for the hobbs switch)You may be able to turn the pump on and off with the E-manage and a vacuum rerefence line. Or maybe your pump is not that loud.I know I am off on a tangeant, but I am just trying to head off little problems. Over on newcelica.org. The man who acutlally made the instructions on the SF kit, stated that between all the engine piggybacks, that the Emanage was easier to deal with . (over split second, which i have, and over unichip) It should be a good set up.Even the Apexi Power FC does not allow the ECu to retard timing via the knock sensor, so IMO, you are safer with a piggyback as the ecu still does it's stuff. MY turbo is a little larger than yours, but yours will spool faster and cover a wider power band. I am pretty sure the E-manage will put the ecu into open loop at the 1st sign of boost, which is what you need at early spooling turbos....again , good luck!

Thanks for the tips. I am bringing in my car next week to have them give a once over so there are no surprises when it comes time to get it done. I will ask them about how they are exactly going to be handling the fuel set-up.

I will ask them about how they are exactly going to be handling the fuel set-up.It's all good! It's funny, when I first went to SF, I walked in with about 3 pages of advice from on-line forums. Most of which was from spyderchat, becaus they had the smartest guys and the most experience with turboing the 1zz 3 years ago. Mike Stafford looked at the stuff briefly, and when he thought I wasnt looking, he threw it in the trash. The reality is, he knew what he was doing. I bet the turbo factory does too. I wouldnt be surprised if they tell you that the stock fuel pump will be enough for supplying fuel and that will be the end of it. The 2zz injectors will probably be perfect for 5psi on your 1zz...and then some. Fyi, the Turbo Performance celica kits use stock injectors up to 5psi on both 1zz and 2zz versions....5 psi on the 2zz injectors in the 2zz? yep. I rode in a Turboed vibe GT at 4 and a half psi at SF one time. The fuel kit was not hooked up yet. We boosted that high anyway. The 2zz injectors should work out great for you imo.

Good luck BlueCrush!! You will have the second "working" turboed awd on the planet. And the first guy dropped off the face of the world. But he was having tranny problems when he disapeared and stopped posting. This was back in the day before the 05s were even out man.
