black box under seat

I have a 2004 Vibe and found a black box under the driver's seat. It is connected with electrical wires. What is the purpose of this ?

supposedly these vehicles do have a "black box" and it is reportably in the dash sompleace.The ones under the seats perform different tasks

Amp or sensors for the airbags is my guess. By sensors I mean those that detect someone is sitting in the seat so the airbag will deploy.the "black box" you guys are talking about is the data recorder... indicating speed of vehicle, RPM. time vehicle had been running and so forth if something goes wrong.

under the driver's seat. that's the power inverter. dc to ac.

At least our Escape had a notice on the front page of the manual that explained that it had a EDR (electronic data recorder).I haven't been able to find any mention of that in the Vibe manual ('05). Hrmf.
