The pillar comes off easily. Just grab at it, it will come loose. Try using felt or foam on all the places the trim meets the dash and the metal body. It will probably help if not eliminate the problem.Quote »2. right under the stereo where the levers are for a/c and heatRemove the radio, stick your hand down there, see if you can't feel anything loose. Also try reseating the controls by removing the trim piece in front and pushing rearward on the controls to ensure they're properly attached.Quote »3. above the dash in the area of the middle, only at hight revs, over 3kYou can probably do this one yourself too. Follow my "remove the dashboard" instructions, and with the dash off, take it out for a spin, and have a friend pinpoint the location of the noise.Quote »4. somewhere behind the glove box, one of the harneses.I had this problem too. Turns out the entire junction assembly was loose. Dealer removed and reseated it, all was well. I'm not sure how to get that one out, so either someone else here will need to chime in, or you can ask the dealer to do that for you.Good luck, let me know if I can assist you further.

I had the same exact problem on my original radio.I took it back to the dealer and they gave me a brand new radio under warranty, no questions asked. I ended up with a brand spainkin' new unit! BUT it was defective from the start (scraping CD mechanism) and I had to get that one replaced. Naturally, ended up with one that had been "refurbished" and it had the same bloody problem with the finish on the face flaking off, but in a different area of the face to the right of the tuning knob where I couldn't really see it. They didn't do such a hot job on refurbishing, in addition to the flaky finish, the display looked like (removed), kinda cloudy and looked like someone took a wet towel and wiped off the inside of the display. I left it at that, since it was working and I couldn't really see the finish flaking off from the driver's seat.On a funny note, I once bummed a ride from a Pontiac dealer's shuttle once and got to ride in their Montana. That thing had a HUGE area where the radio's face was nekkid! I say it is tricky because of that chance you can take it in and get the radio replaced and you'll end up with a perfect new one, or they may give you some refurbished unit that could look worse than what you had replaced. If they give you a new radio, I think from what I've seen so far from me trying to keep the flaking conditions from happening, I can suggest the following: Only touch the controls when you really, really feel the need. And be most careful when cleaning the interior. Make sure no cleaning agents, protectants, etc. make it to the radio, whether that be via overspray or if that is from cleaning the radio itself. If does require cleaning, just try a soft cloth moistened with water, that will get the job done.
