can anyone recommend a good subwoofer for my situation

Post by dave9382 »

Currently I have Cerwin Vega 154 15" sub in a sealed box.1. This situation is not ideal, this sub is designed for a ported box and in my sealed box is only about half as good as it should be. 2. The box takes up way too much room in my hatch area. What I want to do...I bought some 3/4" mdf and want to build my own box. I enjoy classic to alternative hard rock and want a sub that sounds both reasonably loud but can keep up with fast notes and sound quality is superb. I dont need the loudness of a 15" I need something in between a big 15" designed for rap, and an 8". A compromise between good volume and ummph, and sound quality.I want to build a sealed box custom fitted for the hatch area, I don't want to make a ported box since this is my first box build and sealed is easier.Im looking for a sub I guess either 10" or 12" designed to be used in a sealed enclosure but will also put out quality reasonably loud sound that wont be drowned out by the 75X4 multichannel driving 4 6.5" speakers Im about to put in...My amp which I would rather not also have to go through in replace pushes 500Watts RMS... So anything around that would be good. Anyone have any recommendations? Ill do some browsing but wonder if anyone else had similar music tastes as me and could recommend a sub. Thanks

oh and if it matters im using polk components up front and the standard polks 6.5"s in the rear for my regular speakers. They produce very clear and crisp highs, mids, and ok lows but I really want something to flush out the warmth of the music so it really surrounds you and give it some ummphh if you know what i mean

Definitely need 10s.Go with JL audio subs. Very tight and clean and sound great in a sealed box.

I would go with either one 12" or a pair of 10" woofers.A GREAT buy (something I would do if I did it again) would be the Resonant Engineering SX10, SX 12, or XXX12. The XXX12 is more toward the SPL crowd as they are LOUD, but they model REALLY well in a simple ported box. The SX series are awesome in a small sealed enclosure and handle quite a bit of power.Another sub suggestion is for a single 10". The Lightning Audio X1 which can be had for about $140 on Ebay including shipping. I have one of the subs and in a small, and I mean REALLY small, sealed enclosure (0.3 - 0.6 cu. ft.) it SLAMS and is really fast. Don't let the lightning name fool you...this is a serious sub weighing in at about 40 pounds and the throw is phenomenal. I used this sub in the vibe for a month or so and had it in 0.4 cu. ft. sealed and hit in the mid 130's and it was fast and tight. Here is a link to one on Ebay right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/LIGHTNING-...wItemI bought from these guys and it was great! For the price you can't go wrong. Make sure you have enough power to drive it and overbuild the box...even go so far as to BOLT the sub into it because this thing is REALLY heavy. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I'll have to agree with idontknowwhatimdoing.I'll reccomend a single Polk 12 (as long as it's the MOMO). I have one in my Wife's grand am and it is fantastic..

what do you guys think of the Alpine Type Rs, anyone had any experience with how good they sound? They look pretty nice for the money and are perfect for my power handling range...http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...14954to look at it

They work OK, but you can do A LOT better...the JL W6 would beat the Type R into a smelly pulp in every facet IMHO, but there are the loyalists who swear by the Alpine...

even with the RMS of the JL audio sub being 100W less (and I have the amp to power exactly the extra 100W on the alpine)? you still think it would be better?also those things cost twice as much which really might be my deciding factor http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...12514

The more power the better, ALWAYS, try to power match as close as possible. Under powering a subwoofer is B - A - D. Just push as much power to it as you can afford, and you'll be fine. Look for amps with low THD (total harmonic distortion), high S/N (signal to noise ratio), but almost as important as these are the dampening factor, the higher the better. The dampening factor is how well the amp can control its output to the sub, of more simply put, how well the amp controls the speaker's movement.

The Alpine Sub would do the job a good enclosure will make it sound great. How deaf do you wantto be is the question you want to ask yourself.

i think im going to build a custom sealed enclosure about 1ft^3 in volume that will fit with the contours of the vibe and still give me nice cargo room, hope it works out if not i may just have to buy a good one
