Speaker Rattle

Post by wuntrikpony »

Hey guys, I am having a problem on an '03 moons/tunes with a rattling front driver-side speaker. When bass hits certain frequencies, the speaker rattles. Does this sound like the speaker needs to be replaced?

Possibly. The stock speakers aren't anything special. But replacing the speakers can lead to a loss of volume unless you replace the speakers and the amplifier as well.

Try pushing on the door panel and see if the rattle goes away... I've spent many miles driving down the road with as much of my leg pushed up against the door in an attempt to shift my body weight to the door panel so the stupid thing would quit rattling. Both front doors rattle that way, same deal for the Vibe my friend used to have. Every time certain low frequencies hit, rattle rattle rattle...I really don't know of a true fix... My speakers were fine but the door panel was what was actually rattling. It still does it to this day but I have learned to ignore it.

What ballpark price would you figure to replace both speakers and the amp. How much should I be spending to get equal or preferably better quality?

I have a used amp and speakers for sale. But also, if you're not afraid of a little exploration, pull off the door panels and get your hand into the steel of the door. See if anything is on the inside bottom of the door. Rivets, screws, nails, tools, etc. Things can be left in there or end up there accidentally. I had a bad rattle in the passenger door, I found a small piece of metal inside the door that just flew around and vibrated any time the speaker hit a low. Cleaned it out, problem was history. Also make sure the speaker itself is securely riveted in. If one of the rivets breaks off for some reason, it could be causing the speaker itself to vibrate off the door.
