Per GM: Sirius Radio interferes with Navigation System

Post by Sherpa269 »

The local Pontiac dealer spent the day trying to diagnose my Nav System woes (It has been takening a longer ammount of time to get a GPS signal lock and the system has failed to boot up on three ocassions.) The dealer could not get the boot error to repeat. And when the dealer's techs consulted the techies at GM, GM stated that the Sirius Radio I have is some how interfering with the Nav System's ability to get a GPS signal lock.I am skeptical. My dealer's techs are skeptical. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Were they trying to tell you something with the Sirius signal was screwing with your GPS signal? Wouldn't signals from Sirius will still be there regardless of whether you have Sirius installed or not? If THAT was what they were hinting around at, I think that's pretty much bogus and they're just trying to push XM or something. A few questions: Where is your Sirius antenna mounted? What type of receiver? How does it get power, and is there any wiring that may be close to any stock stereo or related GPS component wiring?Yes, anything electrical you add could potentially affect something else electronic via electromagnetic interference or the like. I suppose it can't be ruled out that maybe your tuner is spewing forth harmful rays? I doubt it but it never hurts to check.Maybe try to leave the Sirius tuner off when you think the GPS will throw a fit. If the condition improves, perhaps try relocating the Sirius receiver/antenna/wiring/whatever.

Actually the XM Roady was once thought to cause interference with some Garmin GPS units. It's been more than shown over on xmfan.com. I never had any problems with the SkiFi, Roady, or MiFi personally, but it is possible.Which Sirius unit do you have? If you can turn it off and your GPS suddenly recieves signal within a few minutes, then it's definitely the Sirius unit. If you can show that it causes the interference, i'd try persuing the issue with Sirius, or see if you can't get a different unit.
