knock, knock...who's there..spun bearing...

Post by savedbyzero »

Yup. Spun a rod bearing. Hooray...I guess I'll get that 12.0:1 compression ratio i've always wanted now. Custom-forged pistons by Ross, MWR HD bearings, New stock rods, machined block, head resurfaced, and other misc stuff. Sounds fun, huh...I'll keep you all posted...

Blowing up my motor, that's where! No. Just kidding. The vibe is basically my wife's car now. I'd put as much money into it as I wanted to until now....so I really kinda became disinterested in it. Not too mention this community was really annoying me...and I got a new job that keeps me quite busy as well as running my own photo/graphic design business...not much time life for the ol' vibe and talking about it.Are there still many of us O.G.'s around? I'm representiin' from April 2002!

Yo Brad, what's up?! Yeah, I'm still here, representing from June 2002! I sit in front of a computer all day, so I check out GV daily in my down time.

Nothing other than I just talked to the shop that's rebuilding the motor, The Speed Factor. They're over by the indoor F1 kart track in Cascades. Seem pretty knowledgable on Toyotas. They just informed me that my oil pan looks like it has glitter in it. PRETTY! The water pump was leaking and the head is pretty gummed up for some reason. Amsoil, huh...great stuff.... How's life with you. It's been awhile! Lost my phone with your number in it and my old SOTA email has been bombed by spam, so it's outta use.

Oh man that sucks. When you mentioned you were kidding above, I thought you meant about blowing the engine. So, you are going to upgrade the internals? How about a nice turbo while you're at it?

It's no joke. There's no motor. Only bits and pieces in an aluminium case.Sorry, it did kinda sounded that way. No turbos in the plans. It's gonna break the bank just to get this thing rebuilt. I'll probably bump the compression up to 12:1 though. And it'll be WAY stronger. MMMMM....custom-forged pistons!

Do they know what may have caused the problem and how much it's going to cost to repair? Man that sucks, sorry to hear. I wonder what kind of power gains you'll have with the higher compression and new internals.

A GT.They estimated $1500 for labor...he said he would give me a good deal on parts. Stock rods aren't too bad. The Wiseco piston set is like 550, but Berty at Speed Factor said custom Ross pistons would be a good alternative and more cost affective. The HD rod bearings run $90 for the set. All-in-all, I'm guessing around 3,000+.

Ouch! Hope it turns out great. I don't remember you having reduction pullies but I gotta ask. Hey, it was lubrication related so take Amsoil up on their warranty . Like that ever happens..

Amsoil has a warranty? I just started to use the stuff in my cycles. But don't remember any warranty.

All-in-all, I'm guessing around 3,000+.Salvage yard motors for the 1zz are pretty cheap, but I usually see the 2zz running between 2k and 3k, at least at Car-parts. com. It sounds like your solution is better , and in the end it will perform better and be stronger. If your parts fall through, or you just want to see if there is anything you want to add while your motor is open, check out Monkeywrenchracing.com. The have valvespring set, head studs sets, manifold studs etc. etc. for both the 1zz and 2zz motors. They also have rods and higher comp pistons if you want to shop and compare. If you go higher comp pistons, will you have to have a piggy back or new engine management????You said the water pump was leaking, were your running hot at all??With a turbo, I am still running dino oil. I have to change it often enough anyway. I have read all the propaganda that companies like amsoil puts out, and even if it is all true, I still have not gone wrong with old school dino oil. Stories like yours give me pause in trying that stuff out. I hope your car gets back on its wheels soon.

Talked to Berty over at Speed Factor on Wednesday. The machining and short block rebuild will be $1060. Forged Ross pistons @ 12:1 C/R will be $410. Rods seem to be OK but will find for sure from machine shop. Going with an RPS sport street clutch, MWR bearing kit, and MWR APR stud/boly kit. My dad was able to get a water pump from his NAPA store for $48. All-in-all, it should be a pretty hefty build up for a reasonable price. Could this be the first All-motor build up for Vibe?

The 12:1 pistons are a no go. It would be another 2 weeks to wait, plus I'd have to throw down another $700 to get the block resleeved...and with no form of stand alone engine mgmt, wouldn't do much good.Ordered the MWR bearing set, and decided to go with SPEC Stage 1 clutch....That's all for now.
