Satellite Radio for Ontario

Post by 21Rouge »

I am hearing more info re satellite radio coming officially to Canada. I know very little about such but I am a huge fan of good reception radio. Not much info on XM'x site http://xmradio.ca/main.html. When will it be available in Canada? Would/could one would have a portable unit to take anywhere ie car or home. The price is shown as 12.95 per month. That would include....?

hey boxgrover.check this out: http://www.cab-acr.ca/drri/index.shtmthis is called DAB Radio. not available in the US, but widely used in the UK, canada, etc.(see here: pdf map of world!).as you will see on the first site, there are quite a few radio stations in canada already broadcasting in DAB. I work with some engineers in england (one of which is on his way here tomorrow!) and they say it's amazing. the sound quality is full digital. Problem, you need a DAB receiver. I hear that it is starting to become an option with some car manufacturers in Canada and an intensive search will find you some retailers (Bay Bloor Radio?).I am having my collegue bring over his portable DAB receiver from england to give it a try. dab receivers in UKi'm not sure which one he has...DABs available world widehere for more models too.the BEST thing about this, it's FREE. I know, you can't go across the country and listen to one station, and you are essentially still listening to the same radio programming you get now, but i tend to like many of the stations we have in the toronto area. CBC One broadcasts in DAB, and as you can see (http://www.cab-acr.ca/drri/links.shtm) there are a tonne more! (DAB AM640 leaf games!)i'm planning to get a DAB receiver in the coming year.I'm against paying for radio...not when there are so many decent stations around here. But this is just a product of some research i've done coupled with my opinions.
I have signatures turned off so I'm not even sure what mine says in this space!

According to a friend that I have at the CRTC, there is a really long way to go before we get XM radio in Canada. As I understand it, there are huge issues with liscencing and Canadian content laws that will keep it away from here for years to come.Sucks, but it is what it is.

With satellite radio, you can't beat the commercial-free music stations and great talk, etc... and with reception across the country(ies), it's unbeatable (in my eyes ).

I did some research and there's a typical Canadian problem. The CRTC want to limit channels and also promote Canadian content. To accomplish this, they are mandating all XM radios have a chip that limits channels to 100, not the 120 (I believe those are the numbers. US listeners pls update the total for me). So Canadian head units will have a type of choke so we don't hurt ourselves listing to the likes of Howard Stern. (Source Globe and Mail Nov. 10)This really ticks me off cause I really want to get XM because the local stations here suck. When I get a chance I'm driving to Watertown N.Y and picking up a unit and installing it onsite.Andrew

This sounds exciting. Again I need your experience. I envision having a portable radio that I could use by my bed and bring it with me in the car. Is such piece of hardware available? Which do I need here:?http://www.futureshop.ca/marke...id=EN

The Receiver portable, so you can listen to in the car or at home. When you buy the unit it usually comes with the car kit or the with the home adapter. So you have to buy one of the kit separate. I dont plan to listen to it through a stereo system....but just as a regular radio.
