2003 vs 2004+ stereo

Post by booyah »

I have a 2003 Vibe GT with moon and tunes package and I really want to add a sub w/amp. However, I don't want to tap into the wires to the rear speakers to supply signal (guy at the stereo store told me this is a terrible way to do it -preouts are the way to go), and at the same time I don't want to replace the stock HU (I like the way it matches the car and has the built in CD changer) in order to get a HU with preouts. So, I have mulitple questions:1)Do the 2004+ models have HUs with RCA preouts? And would one fit well in my 2003 (still match interior gauges)?2)Does the 2003 HU already have a preout that is disguised as a different connection (something other than RCA) -it looks like there are other connection ports not being utilized back there.3)What the hell is the part number and/or brand for the 2003 stereo as well as the 2004 or 2005 -can't find this info anywhere (I'm an idiot though)?4)Anyone else ever face this dilema? Any recommendations? Please Help, Thanks.

1A) No1B) Yes2) No3) No idea...4) For Bass it really doesn't matter. Unless you have umpteen amps and subs, high-level input won't show a huge difference to low level. And unless you're willing to ditch your factory headunit for something aftermarket with real pre-outs..you really have no choice.

There are often people on ebay selling stock head units, sometimes they go really low price. People yank them to put in an aftermarket unit and are just getting rid of what they don't need. Single CD units are much more common than your 6CD changer head units though. But I don;t think a stock unit is really going to help with the preouts, I think all the stock head units have speaker level outputs, none have preouts, even when used with the M&T amp. Where's MOTM Jahntassa? I bet he could point you to a half dozen threads where people ahve added subs w/ amp to stock setups.
