so i'm about 2 months into my 03 vibe gt, and getting the hang of the stick has been the biggest task of all. i'm fairly decent at it at this point of course, but there a few things that still bother me. 1 of which is the time between 1st and 2nd. it might just be the way i drive, but when i'm shifting from 1st to 2nd...it seems to make the car lag a bit...which is annoying at stop lights especially when i'm trying to get going again. i've toyed today with starting off in 2nd and i like it a lot more...but...will this harm the tranny or engine at all? does anyone else start in 2nd? it sort of defeats having a 6spd, but i'm not a race car driver so as long as i'm not harming the engine...i think i might continue...any input?thanks!
hi brother chai,Yeah, it'll just take more practice, I don't think it'll do much harm to start off in 2nd but I think you'll be better off shifting faster from 1st to 2nd and catching the RPMs before they drop to the idle level.I sorta have this problem too from time to time. My old truck didn't lag at all when shifting but I don't remember it winding up as much as this engine either. I'm sure it has more to do with the clutch differences too. Shift faster and/or be smoother with the clutch and all should be well.Dave
starting in second is fine. But it should be reserved for usufull times. you would put extended load on a clutch. the vihicle would need more precise clutch/accelerator work. in the long run, your clutch might suffer a short life. you'd better get used to or practice your shiftting skills than always starting in second.

Use 1st gear to get it rolling, it puts the least amount of stress on the clutch to get your car moving. You're either gunning it and dumping the clutch in 2nd, or feathering it so much so you don't kill the engine. Neither makes sense.
