TSB covered after warranty expires?

Post by ajf3ajf3 »

Hey all - Thought I read here that TSB issues were covered even if out of warranty... I found this other page (http://impala.homeip.net/impala/misc/tsb.html) that says that you have to pay for them after the warranty expires.Just want to get it straight since I just got the car, but it has 1500 miles left - want to get as much taken care of as possible before it runs out entirely.Thx!

A TSB is simply guidelines for fixing a common problem that crops up. It is not an authorized warranty repair, and it is not a recall.Basically, no, TSB's are not repaired free of charge outside the warranty period.

And quite often, GM and probably every other manufacturer doesn't even want to perform the repairs outlined on the TSB when the vehicle is still under the original warranty and the issues you're having with the car match the TSB verbatim! There are really only two ways I can think of to get freebies after the warranty expiration: If something happens right after expiration, GM could be nice and goodwill a repair. One can't count on that though, you're pretty much at the mercy of your friendly service manager type person and whoever else.Aside from that, there would have to be a recall or various other service campaign. In those cases, a large number of cars all have to share the same defect before GM will choose to take money out of their pockets to fix out of warranty vehicles. That sort of situation doesn't happen every day either. In short, if warranty is a concern, personally I would highly recommend purchasing a GM MajorGuard extended warranty before the GM factory warranty runs out. Go with your gut instinct, if you feel you need the coverage, don't talk yourself out of it. I almost did, and I'm very glad I didn't. The GM warranty was pricey and I thought I would never have to use it, but as it turns out, it appears to have paid for itself nicely as I have had to use it way more than I should have. Don't even bother with the 3rd party guys...
