Dodge Magnum

Post by Jezter »

Anyone like this car? I have to say I really like it. If I had the money I MIGHT have gotten it over the Vibe, but I doubt it. It has a old school hot rod look to me although every single person I know said it just looks like a station wagon, LOL. I love the front and back but from the side I must say it isn't all that appealing, but I still like it!!

I have thought long and HARD about trading up to a Magnum R/T...and still might down the line. I REALLY like those cars, but I'd have to go with the Hemi

You might enjoy some pics I took at the Indianapolis Auto Show last week. My son is behind the wheel. At 14, he thinks we NEED an 'Arrest me Red' Magnum with a Hemi too!I told him when he can afford the car payments, the insurance, and the gas, HE can buy one. Kinda ruined his day! LOL

I like it but like the 300 better, even drove one, smoked the tires too! Just wait for the replacement Neon, kind of looks like a baby Magnum/Vibe/Crossover vehicle.

I attend church with the guy who owns the local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer (about 2 miles from my house). I really, really like the Magnum and I've been going through the numbers in my head trying to justify a trade-in, but I just owe too much on my Vibe, and I don't think I can part with the 6-speed tranny. Also, I've been really turned off by Chrysler products after owning a crappy Intrepid for 2 years (before dumping it - at a loss)

Damronjr,I like the 'Viper' treatment of the red one. Does it have the V-10 too? Here's a pic of the SRT-8 Concept Vehicle from the Dodge Fan Appreciation fair in conjunction with the Aug 2004 Brickyard 400 weekend. It had a supercharged 5.7L Hemi, allegedly putting out 430hp and 480 ft/lbs of torque.

Magnums are becoming a dime a dozen around here. Which is great, finally people may be realizing that wagons can be sorta cool. While I don't find the Magnum that particularly attractive (not a fan of the front) I'm still happy nonetheless that someone bothered to come up with a station wagon that's worthy of having the tires burned off. I would love to see the Vibe sell like that in this area. But no, the locals refuse to buy 'em. So on any given day, the only Vibe I'll ever see is mine, while it's easy to spot umpteen Magnums. Sadly, my dealer has had the same three Vibes on their lot since October or so.

The Magnum is bad (removed). The SRT-8 concept... . For the complete affect you would have to put suicide doors on it. Then you got yourself a gen-u-wine retro station wagon.

(removed)...I test drove an R/T over the weekend with my wife and in-laws. 0-60 in 8.5 secondsand I wasn't even trying. We loved it. It's what my Vibe dreams of being at night.I'd personally go for aftermarket 20's instead of the OEMs, but was surprised at howsmooth the ride was along with the handling. Headroom and visibility weren't issues for me, as I'm not that tall anyway. One measure of the quality of an instrument cluster is how quickly you get a handle of it as a new driver. I was impressed. Controls seemed very logical to me.Interior space is amazing; it's like a magic trick. I do wish the rear seats folded completely flat, however. Now, I know the R/T is a "semi-Hemi", being that it uses variable displacement, but I think it's not a liability at all. If you really want the horsepower, the SRT-8 with the 6.1 liter engine should do it for ya (425hp @ 5000RPM).The R/T has the Autostick option, but I didn't use it. Shifting was a little loose to me, with bigger gaps between 2-3-4 gears than I expected. I don't know if that smooths out after break-in or not (only 7 miles on this car). (Guess there's always a ground wire install!)I gotta tell ya, if the credit card bills go away in the next few months, I'll doing some serious number crunching...

I like it as long as it's not black. Looks too much like a hearse then. I also mistook a new Charger for a Magnum. The front ends all look the same now. Here'a a pic of one sponsored by an area radio station. I think they said it had about 5k watt's.

They are VERY heavy, even the SRT-8 with 425 HP is over 4200lbs dry weight. I do kinda like the look of the Charger SRT though, although the weight keeps me from considering.

I too feel there should be a 6-speed manual for the Magnum and Charger! Sadly there probably will not be...We will just have to wait for the 2-door Challenger, based off of the Charger, rumored to come out in a couple of years., Maybe it will have a manual trans!

They aren't bad lookin', but what I think is funny is people act like they are not really a wagon. I pointed one out to my wife one day (while driving her Matrix XR) and she said "So?" I said "Well, isn't that cool?" She looked at me and said "It's a STATION WAGON! The only thing missing is the woodgrain paneling and a soccer ball sticker in the back window! No thanks." I quickly reminded her what she was driving. Her reply took me by suprise, but I have to agree with her. "Yeah, but my car isn't a wagon pretending to be a performance car."That last comment got me because the guy driving it was a stereotypical "car guy" wannabe. Brown leather jacket, designer sunglasses, and driving gloves. Driving gloves???!!! Bwaaaaahahahahahahahaha!I dont think the Magnums are fugly, but that damn charger sure is!!! What a joke! A charger 4 door is like a Firebird wagon. It makes no sense. The chager r/t......is that for Realy Tacky stripes and wing? Now THIS is a Charger R/T:

Pulls hard from any speed and sounds great doing it...kinda has a nice (but very muted) NASCAR wail to it under heavy throttle. The MDS works as advertised...it's easy for me to get 20-21 mpg on the highway running on 4 cylinders...again, that's in a 4950 pound SUV with full-time 4WD. I can only imagine what the hemi feels like in a vehicle that weighs 600-700 pounds less and with a transmission that has tighter spacing between the gears...the hemi-equipped Magnum, 300C, and Charger all come with the W5A580 5-speed auto first used in the Mercedes Benz E and S class a few years ago; Grand Cherokees with the hemi come with DaimlerChrysler's truck transmission, the 545RFE. the W5A580 has a similar overall 1st gear ratio as the 545RFE (including considerations for the axle ratio & tire size), but the other gears after that are more tightly spaced in the W5A580...less RPM drop between shifts.

Yeah, it is tacky, but it was actually a true WORKING spoiler. Those cars were developed for nascar with a few making it to the street. The wing gave them such an advantage on the track that NASCAR banned them because of the huge advantage it gave dodge. They are also rare and very valuable. Thus endeth the history lesson.
