vibe GT-R???

Post by mcgusto82 »

ok, it's not a GT-R. it's my vibe. i finally made a functional hood scoop.here is the run down.i spent the better part of a day priming it, painting it, and clear coating it.small enough as i wanted it.i used a drill and 1/2" bit to make the saw insertion points.the frame work under the sheet metal wa a little difficult to cut. the saw's blade wasn't long enough to reach the lowest point. had to snip it with a metal scissor.the scoop before it goes over the cavity.after getting the cavity done, i prepered the exposed metal. used the primer i had used the night before i painted the scoop. with a brush i made sure i got all the bare metal. don't want corrosion to ruin the job later on.the scoop is attached by a strip of double sided cushiom tape going around. i added a 1" strip at the front for further protection. the whole job without the painting took me 3 hours.the painting was a whole day basically.my RAM CAI is in the mail. i think the whole RAM scoop isn't going to work as planned.due to the contours of the hood, i had to move it further to the center of the hood. it should still be functional. it won't be ram air thoughso waht do you guys think?

very unique. any plans on getting it fiberglassed to look like it is part of the hood. great idea and it looks similar to gt-r specs.

That is about as close to a GT-R hood as you are going to get. Nice work. I see you had to cut the structural brace on the underside of the hood. 1) Does the hood feel more flimsy now? 2) Is there a screen on the scoop?3) Is the opening right over where the Short Ram filter will be located? If so, you might be want to be concerned about water entering the filter and causing your engine to hydrolock. You may also want to rig up a cover/plug for the hood scoop for driving in the rain and snow. You have some kahunas, man. I would never do that to my only hood. I would have bought a hood from a salvage yard and modified that one so I knew I had an oem one to fall back on when I screwed the modified one up. It looks good. The paint is almost a perfect match.

I like it, I bet with some custom fab work you could make it functional. might have to do some kind of fiberglass or rubber cowling. oh and by the way, what is that rocket thingy?

That looks very cool. Nice job. Maybe after you get the short ran in you could create something to divert the wind to the intake.

NICE! yeah when your short ram is installed, fabricate a shield of sorts to direct the air to it. Any thoughts on water getting in though?

The paint is almost a perfect match. i WAS planning on doing this shield.http://forums.genvibe.com/zero...r.JPGa plastic bucket cut to hold the ram intake and keep it from getting hot air. to keep the water out.. i was going to drill holes on the bottom. 1: the hood doesn't feel clumsy at all. the sheet metal collapses more with weight over it. it did it before, it does it alittle more now. not worried about structure rigity. will get a strut bar soon anyways.2: no, screen was not included with the scoop. i might try and make one. not a priority.3:no, the opening is not right over the air intake. it isn't possible unless you mold it in. (i'm cheap. hence doing it myself.)however the opening IS right over the battery positive terminal. i ned to get a batery cover. unless in heavy storm. water would just drizzle down. it might even evaporate. i stuck my hand inside after coming from SAM'S club. it's very hot around that area.it isn't possible to place the scoop there because of the hoods contour. the scoop is made of rigid abs plastic and won't properly stick with the contours. i had to place it over a flat enough area. i have a little experience on manufacturing and fixing structure material from my navy times. even painting."(removed)! what are you doing to my hood?" - my wife.

on a related note. i removeed the tubing going from the filter box to the intake behind the headlight. the cars makes considerately more noise under load. almost sounds like a custom muffler job.not sure how i feel about it. i suppose the ram intake will make the same noise.with the scoop being there it was ideal to remove that tube. let the filter box get the cool air above it.

Darn, so it doesn't really diffuse the air and improve your gas mileage? Bummer. J/K Hey, if you like it, keep it. I was just curious what it was. You did a good job with the hood scoop, paint looks to match well. Did you just use the auto touch up spray paint you can find in auto shops? Like someone said before, you are brave to do that to your original hood. I would have wanted to try it out on some hood from a scrap yard or something.
